    Frequently Asked Questions

    Do I need to pay Council Tax?

    Great news in the UK, students are currently exempt from Council Tax so thats one less cost to worry about. That said, if you finish your time as a student and dont immediately leave, you will be liable for Council Tax if it becomes due.

    Can I bring my musical instrument with me?

    Prince Consort Village offers 24 hour practice rooms, equipped with quality pianos for residents to use. During permitted times residents are also welcome to practice in their own rooms, using their own instruments.

    Please be aware that rooms are unlikely to be able to accommodate larger instruments, such as pianos and larger electronic keyboards.

    Am I allowed to bring a television for my room?

    Yes, youre more than welcome to bring your own television. Dont forget that youll need to buy your own television license, so have a quick read of the information here first. There are no aerial ports in our rooms so its worth checking that you can receive a good reception before buying your licence and installing your TV. That way, you wont be out of pocket if you find that youre unhappy with the quality of the picture.

    Can I bring a pet?

    As much as we love cuddly, furry animals, theres a strict no pets policy at all our villages at the moment. This includes every type of pet, from goldfish and birds to cats and dogs. This excludes guide or hearing dogs.

    Can I choose who I live with?

    No-one wants to live with someone theyre unlikely to bond with so our system allows you to choose the room you like and view the profile of other students who have booked already.  You can then select a room and flatmates to suit your lifestyle and interests.

    Does the Village run social events and activities?

    Yes. Weve created Village Life, a programme packed with events and activities that will help you settle in and meet new friends.

    Welcome BBQs, retro games nights, cookery demos and more: we have a variety of events taking place which appeal to as many of our residents as possible.

    Want somebody to stop over?

    You can have a maximum of two guests stay with you for a maximum of two nights in any seven-day period.

    They must be signed in at Reception and you have to be with them all the time they are in your building. And if you are sharing, check that its ok with your roommate first its only fair.

    How do I keep warm in my room?

    The heater in your room works on a two-hour timer if the switch isnt near the heater, youll find it in your desk area.

    Dont put anything on your heater as its a fire hazard!

    How do I get things fixed?

    Something broken or not working? No problem. Give us as much detail as you can and well fix it as soon as we can.

    If its anything like:

    * Flooding

    * Broken doors

    * Electricity gone off

    then go down to Reception and let them know and fast!

    What can I plug in?

    Small electrical items are perfectly ok in your room.

    Keep any appliances you have in good condition so that they meet safety regulations and making sure they comply with UK standards is your responsibility.

    No hotplates or electric heaters please! And, unless its a medical fridge, you cant have a fridge other than the one already in your kitchen.

    Any appliances we provide are tested annually to make sure theyre safe.

    What if I want to go away?

    All we ask is that you:

    * Switch off all your electrical gear except your fridge or freezer

    * Dont leave any valuables in your room

    * Make sure your door is locked as you leave

    * Please tell Reception if youre going to be away for more than 48 hours we dont want to be sending out a search party to look for you

    What if Ive a problem with my room?

    Whatever it is, well do our best to sort it.

    If you want to move to another room and theres one available, we can do that but there may be a small fee.

    And if you move to a room with a higher rent, you will be asked to pay the balance.

    Contact Reception and theyll be happy to discuss.

    What should I bring?

    * Bedding

    * Towels

    * Cleaning products

    * Toilet brush

    * Bin

    * Anything else to make your room feel like home no pets!

    And for the kitchen:

    * Pots and pans

    * Crockery

    * Cutlery

    * Cups

    * Glasses

    Can I move in early?

    Yes.

    Expecting something in the post?

    Not a problem. Mail is delivered Monday to Friday and can be collected from the postal box on the ground floor. We will sign for Registered Post and Special Delivery items. We keep parcels in the office and will send you a note and an email to let you know its here for you to collect.

    When is my rent due?

    If youre paying by instalments, your payments are due on:

    * 24th September 2018

    * 8th January 2019

    * 30th April 2019

    These dates should line up with your student loan payments. Just remember you need to make sure youve applied and submitted everything needed for your loan in good time. If you dont, your loan may be delayed and this will make it hard to make your rent payments!

    *If your financial arrangements are with your university, your instalment dates may vary and you should contact your university finance team if you have any questions.
