Coventry Institution is a public research university that was founded in 1843 in the city of Coventry, England. Founded as the Coventry School of Design, it was then renamed "The Municipal Art School" under the Education Act 190 in the early twentieth century. In the 1950s, the school's name was changed once more to the College of Art. The Lanchester College of Technology was founded to address the need for advanced technological skills and was named after the car engineer Frederick Lanchester. Lanchester College of Technology was merged with the College of Art and the Rugby College of Engineering Technology to form Lanchester Polytechnic in 1970. Later, in 1992, the institution was granted university status and was renamed Coventry University.
