About Fountainbridge

Situated a short distance west of Edinburgh's Old Town, Fountainbridge is bordered on the south by the Union Canal and on the north by the West Approach Road. Originally an industrial district built around the street of the same name, Fountainbridge began development in the 18th century. The area was seen as a desirable place to live due to its quiet and rural nature, offering an escape from the cramped conditions of Old Town. Redevelopment of the area began in 1998 with the construction of the Fountain Park Leisure Center on a former brewery site north of Dundee Street. This cinema replaced the Palais de Danse, which was Edinburgh's largest cinema, ballroom and ice rink. The closure of Fountainbridge Brewery was announced in 2004 and the entire 8.9-hectare site was phased out and demolished from 2006-2011.
