About Kogarah

This Sydney suburb in New South Wales is around 13 kilometres from Sydney, has an area of 2.608 square kilometres and is located in the Australian Eastern Daylight Time zone Australia/Sydney and has a population of 15,124 people. The locality is named after a tiny bay on the Georges River's northern coast that the suburb once extended all the way to but it has since been separated into the independent suburbs of Kogarah Bay and Beverley Park. Its name is derived from an Aboriginal term that means rushes or reeds. It had previously been spelled 'Coggera,' 'Cogerah,' and 'Kuggerah,' but the current spelling was established when the railway line arrived through the region in the 1880s.

Made up of a mix of residential, commercial, and light industrial areas, only 33% of this area’s residents are born in Australia, with the rest of its population originally from China, Nepal, and other (mostly-Asian) countries. This diversity in cultures gives you a world-class experience, with exposure to different languages, food, and practices all within a 3-square kilometre piece of land. The area is conveniently equipped with all-day access to transportation.

Even when travelling only within Sydney's central business district and inner suburbs, public transit can be challenging. In Kogarah, walking can often be quicker than taking public transportation for short distances. Applications for smartphones like Google Maps, TripView, Moovit, and Arrivo Sydney, which use real-time transit data for all forms of transportation, are highly helpful for excursions, including public transportation inside the Sydney region.

1. Bus: Buses are the most pocket-friendly mode of transport for students to use. A weekly bus pass will cost around AU$10 - 30, depending on the service. Miranda tends to be the main bus hub, with services running to Lilli Pilli, Sylvania (as well as Cronulla and Sutherland).

2. Metro: The city also has a metro system that runs through it and is convenient for students. It runs mainly underground and has 13 different significant stations. The metro network is constantly growing, with new lines and stations being built to improve connectivity within the city.

Peak times (7-9:30 AM and 4:30-7 PM) have more frequent and crowded trains and some express services that skip more stations. Trains between Sutherland and Cronulla every 15 minutes, and every 30 minutes to other stations.

4. Bicycle: The area can be pleasant for cycling, but plan your route to avoid traffic and significant hill climbs. The three cross-routes from West to East, connect Illawong to Sutherland, Sutherland to Tarren Point, and Taren Point to Cronulla and Kurnell.
