The University of the West of England, Bristol (UWE Bristol) is a public research university in and around Bristol, England, founded in 1992. Like the Universities of Bristol and Bath, it can trace its roots back to the Merchant Venturers' Technical College, founded as a school by the Society of Merchant Venturers in 1595. UWE Bristol is made up of several campuses located throughout Greater Bristol. Frenchay Campus has the most students because it houses most university courses. Bower Ashton Studios, Arnolfini, Spike Island, and Watershed are part of the City campus, which offers courses in the creative and cultural industries. The Further and Higher Education Act of 1992 granted the institution university status and gave it its current name. In January 1996, the Avon and Gloucestershire College of Health, now Glenside Campus, and the Bath and Swindon College of Health Studies merged. Hartpury campus became a member in 1997. The QS ranking of the university is 801. Furthermore, the institute provides a student union.
