To celebrate colours all month long!
On Thursday, June 1, Pride Month officially kicks off in honour of LGBTQ+ identity and to raise awareness of problems the LGBTQ community faces globally.
Stonewall and other charities work throughout the month to promote change and acceptance in society and workplaces.
This month of June provides a chance for not only the LGBTQ community but also people from all walks of life to learn about the gay communities and fight for rights.
The concept of pride originated from the Stonewall riots.
A series of riots began after the police raided a gay bar called Stonewall Inn located in Lower Manhattan in New York City on June 28 1969.
The first Pride march took place on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall; uprisings were held in New York, Los Angeles & Chicago, where thousands joined to fight for LGBTQ rights.
This movement led to the LGBTQ community to develop a feeling of pride and self-confidence, indirectly fuelling courage and the feeling of dignity and self-worth.
This year’s campaign will look to honour and celebrate the 1.5 million LGBTQ+ people in England & Wales. London being one of the best places to celebrate Pride in the world.
