UK Visa for Chinese Students

Chinese students interested in studying in UK and applying for a Student visa can benefit from a streamlined process. UK Immigration Rules have been adjusted to reduce documentary requirements for Tier 4 student visa applicants from China. These changes are outlined in Appendix H of the Immigration Rules and are aimed at making the application process more efficient and less burdensome for Chinese students.

One of the significant changes is that Chinese applicants will no longer be required to provide financial evidence, qualifications, or evidence of their English language proficiency. This departs from the previous requirements and aligns China with other countries such as Argentina, Australia, and Bahrain, which already enjoy a more simplified university application process.

While the general criteria for Chinese nationals seem to have been simplified, the Home Office retains the right to request additional evidence if they find it necessary and appropriate during the application assessment process. This adjustment in UK visa application process has been welcomed by Her Majesty's Ambassador to China, Dame Barbara Woodward. She emphasised that this simplification is excellent news for numerous young students embarking on their educational journey in UK during the upcoming autumn semester and for those considering pursuing a UK education in the future.

In terms of statistics, it's worth noting that in the year ending March 2018, UK granted around 89,000 Tier 4 student visas to Chinese applicants. This represented a 15% increase compared to the previous 12 months, highlighting the strong interest and demand from Chinese students to study in the UK. Notably, a remarkable 99% of the applicants were successful in obtaining their visas.

Which UK universities have the most Chinese students?

By now, you are aware of the scholarships and visa requirements for Chinese students in UK. These reasons have led to a considerable increase in the Chinese student population in UK. Given below are five universities in UK that have the most number of Chinese students admitted, according to the data provided by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) in decreasing order:

  1. University College London - 9,840
  2. University of Manchester - 8,645
  3. University of Edinburgh - 6,375
  4. Imperial College London - 6,105
  5. University of Warwick - 5,485

Career Tips for Chinese Graduates in UK

What if we tell you that you have a great chance of pursuing the career of your choice in UK? If you are a Chinese student and are finished with your studies, you can opt for a Graduate Route visa which will enable you to stay in UK for two years after graduation and allow you to work at any skill level or field during your stay. It is important to understand the ins and outs of UK job market while looking for your next big break. You might encounter some problems during your job search, for which we have some useful tips:

1. Familiarise Yourself with UK Job Market

Perform your own research to understand how UK job market works. Search for industries and job roles that resonate with your own skills and areas of interest. Actively engage on platforms like LinkedIn, Indeed and Glassdoor to stay up-to-date on current trends and in-demand roles.

2. English Language Skills

It goes without saying that having a strong grip on the English language is crucial for a successful career. Have conversations with native speakers, and consume English media such as the news and films. Consider giving an English language proficiency test like IELTS or TOEFL.

3. Tailored CVs

Your CV and cover letter should highlight relevant skills and experiences, so tailor it accordingly. Your average Chinese CV is very different when compared to its UK counterpart in terms of length, personal information, structure, language and tone. Be mindful of these differences and craft the documents adhering to UK’s format.

4. Professional Networking

Build a strong network of professionals by attending industry events and job fairs. Join online communities related to your field and contact people for advice or mentorship. Never hesitate to ask for help! Job referrals are a powerful tool for career success, which you can leverage with your existing connections to land your next big role!

5. Utilize Alumni Resources

Connect with former Chinese students who have secured high-paying jobs in UK and take guidance from them. They will offer valuable insights about the job market and help you navigate it better.

10 Things You Need to Know As a Chinese Student in UK

As a Chinese student preparing to move to UK, you might be curious about what British culture is like. The countries are poles apart in many different ways. Here are ten things that you must know before you move to UK:

1. You Don't Have to Study Around the Clock

British teachers won't pressure you into constant studying. They might suggest effective study methods, but your choices are respected. If you choose not to study, they won't force you (though studying is advised). They encourage a balanced life beyond academics, fostering hobbies and leisure.

2. Focus on Critical Thinking

In British universities, they really focus on critical thinking. Teachers there really like it when you share your thoughts and even challenge their ideas. They don't usually look for just one "correct answer," except in subjects like math or physics. This style of teaching makes your classes feel more like interesting conversations!

3. The Pub Takes Centre Stage

Pubs, not coffee shops, are the heart of British socialising. Though coffee shops abound, pubs are where social life thrives. Students bond over drinks, fostering deeper connections with peers. Non-alcoholic options are available, and some pubs host quizzes and music nights for group participation.

4. Self-Expression Through Tattoos

In UK, tattoos are seen as a way to express yourself, not as a sign of a difficult past. People really like decorating their bodies with tattoos. They can be really beautiful or mean something special, like flowers or the names of loved ones. Some even get fun tattoos with things like smiley faces or Pikachu.

5. Mouth-Watering Breakfasts

The British breakfast is famous for its hearty and delicious variety. An English breakfast comes with bacon, eggs, sausages, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, toast, and sometimes even more. While it's not an everyday thing, people really love treating themselves to this special meal.

6. Delicious Chinese Teas

UK has a lively tea culture and a range of Chinese tea options. Even though coffee is popular, tea has a special place in British hearts. Finding your favourite Chinese tea blends in UK is simple and enjoyable!

7. Warm British Hospitality

British people are known for being really friendly, and sometimes their warmth might seem a bit much. When strangers call you "dear" or "love," they're just trying to be nice and make a connection with you.

8. The British 'How Are You' Mystery

Brits commonly inquire, "How are you?" as a courtesy rather than a genuine query. Responding with a brief, "Fine, thanks, and you?" is appropriate. Expressions like "See you later" are casual farewells, even if future plans are uncertain.

9. Big Clothing Sizes

Clothing sizes are different in UK compared to China. If you usually wear a large in China, you might find a small size fits you better in UK. Remember to try on clothes before purchasing, especially if you're shorter – there are special petite sizes available. British fashion is often more daring, with women's clothing often having lower necklines, shorter skirts, and tighter tops.

10. Sarcastic Nature of the Brits

Sarcasm is a big part of British humour, even between friends. It's a fun way to connect and joke around, something close friends often do!
