Your ultimate guide to student maintenance loan
The maintenance loan keeps students afloat!

One of the main sources of funding for students, while they are in college, is the student maintenance loan. We know what you’re thinking, “What am I, a car to needs maintenance? But, believe it or not, both need one! Therefore, it makes sense to learn about the eligibility requirements, the application process, and the amount of a student finance maintenance loan you'll receive since you'll almost probably be taking one out. Additionally, you'll need to understand how to repay it and what to do if your loan is insufficient. So here is all you need to know about Student Maintenance Loans!

What is a student maintenance loan?

This might be a new loan terminology for many young aspirants, “Student Maintainece Loan”. So basically in order to assist with your living expenses while you are attending college, the government offers this loan, which is a type of student loan. The upkeep loan is there to assist you with paying for things like rent, bills, food, and nights out, among other things. The three months of January, April, and September are when you receive the three payments of the student maintenance loan.

  • Helps ease the financial burden during college.
  • Available for both local and international students in some countries.
  • Can be combined with part-time work for extra financial support.
  • Often used alongside other financial aid, like scholarships or grants.

How does the student maintenance loan work?

Three (nearly) equal payments for these loans are made throughout the year directly into your student bank account. With the exception of Scotland, where loans are paid monthly, you'll get one at the start of each semester. This implies that it is up to you to budget your loan wisely and make sure you don't waste it all during your fresher's week.

  • Your daily living expenses will be covered by a student finance maintenance loan from Student Finance England, and your university tuition will be covered by a tuition loan (if you are eligible).
  • At the beginning of each term, three instalments of the loan will be sent straight to your student bank account.
  • Your living situation and household income, which you can determine before getting the loan, will determine the loan amount.

Who can be eligible for a student maintenance loan?

You must meet a few requirements in order to be eligible for such a loan. Don't worry—we'll go over each requirement one by one shortly. The majority of college freshmen who enrol in classes are often eligible for financial aid.

  • New full-time students
  • Continuing full-time students
  • Pupils who study part-time
  • European Union students (must have lived in the UK for 3 or more years)

While most of the students studying in the UK are eligible for a student maintenance loan, there are exceptions to this. They are as follows:

  • A second degree is being pursued by students at the same level (not a Postgraduate course)
  • Students from non-EU countries who haven't resided in the UK for more than three years
  • Students that are over 60 years of age

For better understanding you can also opt for a loan entrance counselling session.

How large an amount does the student maintenance loan provide?

Now coming to the important question, how much money do you get exactly for a student maintenance loan? Two words - It depends. The amount of a loan depends on a lot of factors. For the academic year of 2021–2022, the maximum student maintenance loan amount is £12,382 per year, but only if you live away from your family home in London. The amount you will be eligible for will depend on your living conditions and the location of your university.

To begin with, the amount you are eligible for is determined by a number of variables, most importantly, your household income and whether you are living alone or with your caretakers. A student can only receive a loan of up to £9,706 per year. Although this could seem like a lot of money, students should be careful not to spend it on frivolous frivolities. Here's where creating and following a budget comes into play. It is crucial to set up a budget that specifies your daily, weekly, or monthly expenses because doing so promotes saving and even aids in reducing wasteful spending.

How to apply for a student maintenance loan

If you wish to apply for a student loan, then there are multiple ways to do that. However, the most convenient way would be to do it online.
On the SLC website, you can submit an application for the loan. Simply complete the form by following the online directions. The procedure is quick. Although you may apply for a maintenance loan via mail as well, doing so online is quicker and more convenient.

Student maintenance loan for living costs

The Student Maintenance Loan (for living costs) helps international students with things like rent, bills, and food while they learn overseas. It supports their cost of living and helps to lighten some burden about how they can take care of themselves in the strange land from which students come from all over the globe.

How can you repay your student maintenance loan?

First off, you can only begin to repay your loan when you have finished your course. You must earn more than £27,295 per year in order to be eligible to repay the loan, which is another important condition. If you are self-employed, you can easily file for payback when you file your taxes. If you have another job, the repayment amount will just be taken out of your paycheck like a tax. You can also:

  • Request financial assistance from your parents.
  • Utilise the grants, scholarships, and bursaries available.
  • Find a part-time job or a part-time student internship.
  • Have or establish a savings account just for emergencies.

For UK graduates, the following are the current payback thresholds:

  • £27,295 per year (£2,274 per month, or £524 per week) is the annual loan limit for students from England and Wales who are enrolled in Plan 2.
  • Northern Ireland residents can borrow up to £20,195 ($1,682 per month, or £388 per week) under Plan 1 loans.
  • Scottish students who borrowed under Plan 4 received a pre-tax amount of £25,375 ($2,114 per month, or $487) each year.
  • You can check out our blog for some tips on how to repay your loan without a hiccup.

When is your debt from the maintenance loan absolved?

The fact that the government cancels the remaining balance of the student maintenance Loan after about 30 years, regardless of how much has been paid back, is a significant benefit of the loan's repayment terms. Thirty years after you initially become eligible to repay your loan, if you're a resident of England, Scotland, or Wales, your loan is written off (the April after you graduated).

After 25 years, student loans for students in Northern Ireland are forgiven. If you must apply for a benefit due to a handicap and are unable to work in the UK, your loan will be forgiven. To achieve loan forgiveness and a debt-free future, explore the student loan forgiveness program.

It is evident that student maintenance loans play an important role in supporting students financially. However, there is a need for more research to be conducted in order to determine the long-term effects of such loans. In the meantime, it is important for students to be mindful of their spending and to make sure that they are able to repay their loans in a timely manner. Read more about the best student loan providers and how to spot scams among them, along with management tips. Happy learning!
