HOW I THINK ABOUT STUDENT HOUSING

“I’ve spent years watching students arrive in a new country with a suitcase, a few worries, and a lot of questions. The ones who settle fastest usually have a clear picture of what their home will cost, what they’ve signed, and who to call. That clarity does more for them than almost anything else.”

Jools Horton-Lakins

Jools Horton-Lakins is Director of University Partnerships at Amber, where he built and leads the company’s Higher Education Partnerships function, setting its strategy, operating model, and product direction. His team works with education institutions to provide student accommodation that fits what their students need. A large part of his work is understanding the student experience: he analyses Amber student reviews to track what shapes confidence and wellbeing, from the arrival journey to clarity on costs and contracts and the support students receive. He also shares Amber’s market insights on student housing demand and pricing across the UK and other destinations. Before Amber, he spent more than two decades in international education, including over five years as Head of Operations and Designated Safeguarding Lead at a UK student accommodation agency. At Amber, Jools reviews UK city accommodation guides, covering what student housing costs, which areas suit students, and what to check for safety and welfare before moving in.
