Australia Visa News: Australia Contemplates Student Visa Cap

Australia is pondering upon implementing a decision similar to Canada student visa cap and executing an identical Australia student visa cap. This decision is being taken into consideration after keeping in mind the growing population in Australia. An eminent immigration expert based in Australia, Abul Rizvi, also a former Deputy Secretary of Australia’s Immigration Department, has raised concern that the Australian government can hastily opt for approaches adopted by Canada and the UK. Rizvi warned that a similar approach can be taken up by Australia as well given the sudden rise in the population of the country.  “I think the most likely blunt instrument is a cap.”, Dr Rizvi suggested. He also added, “I’m worried that the government will panic and do something [as] equally silly as the UK or Canada, rather than having a sensibly thought through approach to manage this.”

Dr Rizvi stated, based on the currently available data, that the overall rise in permanent and long-term temporary residents, encompassing students, has surged by 90,000 in the current financial year compared to the corresponding period of the preceding year.

Dr Rizvi suspects that the government is in panic mode and might curb migration, which may involve a significant rise in the rejection rates for student visa applications, particularly for students from India and Nepal, which are their key source markets for international students in Australia. These rejections can be driven by an unofficial directive to the immigration officials by the government. Although, it is an unsustainable strategy to manage the population. It is not fair to the visa applicants as they might turn out to have all the prerequisites to get their visa approved for Australia.
