British Columbia Seeks Trudeau’s Aid In Curbing Int’nl Student Crackdown
Canada News
In the wake of the BC ban on international students, British Columbia has now requested Prime Minister Trudeau to soften his stance on the Canada immigration ban. Specifically, the region has requested the State to spare schools that train students for key jobs such as trucking and healthcare.
The crackdown that ensued, as highlighted in the Canada student visa news, showed glimpses of Trudeau making efforts to win back his vote bank. Trudeau, recently, has been losing popularity in the North American nation, being labeled as the “worst president in 50 years” according to an Ipsos poll.
In his efforts to curb the student housing crisis gripping Canada, the Trudeau govt. announced a temporary ban on the number of future international students in Canada. However, BC Post-Secondary Education Minister Lisa Beare highlighted that the policy shouldn’t be squeezed so much that the shortages in the labour market get exacerbated further.
Beare is set to engage in talks with federal immigration minister Marc Miller to “continue the conversation about increasing BC’s allowance of letters of attestation for in-demand areas” such as trucking and early childhood education and health services.
Trudeau, already lagging in popularity for the upcoming elections, has taken steps such as the Canada immigration ban. This move may seem long overdue after the State let the population jump from 1.25 million to 40.5 million within a year. A high influx of foreign students is attributed to this inflation in population.
It is expected that this year, 2024, colleges in BC will get 27% fewer study permits than they did in 2023, likely impacting the functioning of many institutions that depend on international students.
Beare has declined to comment on how many colleges will be affected due to the change after the BC ban on international students. To stay tuned for further information regarding the happenings in Canada, keep in touch with amber newsroom.
