The SAT exam is undergoing a significant change this year as it transitions to a digital format. This change, which has been anticipated for some time, aims to make the test shorter, more adaptive, and reflective of real-world skills. One notable expert in the field, Shaan Patel, Founder and CEO of Prep Expert, has commented on the changes. Patel, who has over two decades of experience with the SAT, believes that while the new digital format may make the test somewhat easier, it remains a challenging exam.

One key difference in the digital SAT is its adaptability. According to the SAT news, the questions will be formed in difficulty based on the student's previous answers as they progress through the test. According to Patel, this adaptive approach is designed to provide a more accurate assessment of a student’s abilities.

In addition to being adaptive, the digital SAT also introduces other changes. For example, students can now use a calculator on all questions, whereas in the past, there was a section where calculator use was prohibited. “There’s even a digital calculator built into the testing application, in case you don’t have a graphing calculator,” said Patel. The reading passages are also shorter. The essay section has been removed, and grammar questions are now integrated into the reading section, highlights the SAT news.

Another notable change is the inclusion of new question types that require students to read notes and determine the most relevant information. Patel said, “The new question types are actually testing students in a much more real-world manner than the previous versions of the SAT. Overall, this test will be more relevant to real-world skills. So, I’m optimistic the changes will be good.”

In terms of preparation, Patel recommends that students familiarise themselves with the new format by using the College Board’s Bluebook app to take practice tests. He also emphasises the importance of starting preparation early, ideally in 10th grade, to ensure readiness for the exam. Overall, the transition to a digital SAT represents a significant change for students and colleges alike. While the new format may bring some challenges, it also offers new opportunities for students to demonstrate their skills and abilities.
