The ancient city of Exeter is greeted with the plan for more student flats as per the latest PBSA market news. It is one of the major investments in the student housing market in Exeter, with £100,000 being invested by developers for community healthcare.

The Johnson Apparelmaster workwear factory in Cowley Bridge Road, destroyed by fire in 2020, will be repurposed for student accommodation in Exeter for 350 university students. The site plan is of six-story buildings divided into four blocks. The members of the planning committee of Exeter City Council have backed the plan with great support.

The site of the new student housing complex was categorised as a ‘windfall’ apt for a number of uses, according to councillors. The four-block student flats will ensure 350-bed spaces for the students and will be right across the pavement. The buildings will have an amenity space in between them with a view of Exe Valley. The ground space is supposed to have a communal space for the students to unwind and connect.

According to Cllr Martin Pearce (Lab, Duryard & St James), “More PBSA construction will lead to keeping the properties locally in the general housing stock.” Furthermore, he says, “The number of students in Exeter has grown twofold after the removal of cap on student numbers in 2010. However, the availability of student accommodation in Exeter has not kept pace with the growing numbers even after concrete steps taken by the city council.”

Mr Cllr Michael Mitchell (Lab, Duryard & St James) says “that there was a significant loss of family homes towards the student accommodation market in Exeter. And, that, the new student flats is the right decision at the right time. This was also one of the easiest applications in their ward.”

One important point to note in the PBSA news is that the plan was approved on the condition of the contribution of £100,000 towards NHS services in the locality.

In conclusion to this latest PBSA news in the UK, the dire need for student housing and curbing the existing gap between the demand and supply of student flats in Exeter will be fulfilled to an extent by this plan.

Student housing in the UK is pipping hot as a market, and making an investment in the market now is going to be rewarding, according to market experts.
