Glasgow City Centre: 321 studio apartments for students approved

In the latest Glasgow news, developers get approval to turn a vacant office building into a student accommodation unit of 321 studio apartments for students. Homes for Students and Artisan Real Estate have stated that these self-contained flats at St Vincent Street will be aimed at the overseas student market and post-graduate students. 

The Glasgow City Council has replaced the earlier approved plan of constructing a hotel and serviced apartments with this new plan of building a student accommodation unit. In an assessment report released on behalf of the developer's Artisan Real Estate, it was noticed that the supply of the rising student accommodation units is facing a crunch. 

As per David Westwater, Scottish regional director for Artisan, "The longer-term student market we are targeting will bring energy and investment to the city centre and ensure deliverability of a superbly designed development to replace the existing office block which has remained vacant for four years."

Furthermore, the report stated that "Glasgow already has an established purpose-built student accommodation market. However, it does not provide the amount of good quality accommodation required to house students." 

Additionally, after reassessing the market thoroughly, the plan stated that "the generally increasing population of students in the UK and the continued growth of student numbers in Glasgow, the challenge of finding homes for this student population will continue to increase and continue to put pressure on the private rented sector."
