Is the UK education system under strain? How much is student debt in UK?

Key Points

  • The largest outstanding student debt in UK surpasses £230,000, with the highest repayment at £110,000
  • Average student debt upon graduation stands at £44,940, raising concerns among student organizations
  • BBC's Freedom of Information request reveals staggering figures, prompting scrutiny of the university funding system
  • Economists suggest these high debts are atypical and not reflective of most graduates' experiences

According to the latest data revealed by Student Loans Company (SLC), the largest outstanding student debt in UK currently stands at a whopping number of upwards of £230,000. The data further reveals how the largest repayment amongst all student loans in UK that has been made so far is £110,000. Another loanee accumulated interest alone of £55,000.

The data released by SLC originated from BBC’s Freedom of Information (FOI) request. This student debt news is jarring for many as the SLC data showed that the average student in the UK leaves university with an average debt of £44,940.

The data raised many eyebrows as student organisations deemed the figures to be “truly eye-watering”. The National Union of Students believed this raised questions about the university funding system across the country.

On the flip side, however, an economist at the Institute of Fiscal Studies said that the toweringly high student loans in UK  were “highly unusual” and not “representative at all of most graduates’ experience.”

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA),  passed in the UK in 2000 gives you the right to request information that should be publicly available. BBC raised an FOI request to ask the SLC for the highest amounts of student debt in UK owed by individuals, for various types of student loan plans. The FOI request also asked for the highest amount of interest accumulated, the highest amount of “noncompliance interest” (NCR), and the largest amount repaid in full.

How much is student debt in UK in terms of the highest amount owed? Well, it is the individual who owes £230,000 in student debt. Nick Hilman, the director of the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI), even admitted that he had never seen figures like this in his 15-year-long career in the education sector. Around 1.5 million student loans in UK are processed every year

Dr. Luke Amos, a doctor in Surrey and one of the few students who owed high amounts of student debt in UK said his loan “became almost a joke when I saw the outstanding balance break the £100,000 barrier.” The 27-year-old admitted to the BBC that he has no hope of paying off the full loan.

In nearly, 15 years, the average tuition fees in the UK have almost tripled, a cause of concern for students since fees now cost a maximum of  £9,250 per year for domestic students. However, student loans in UK are cleared up after the end of the loan term, often 30 years, regardless of how much debt is owed.

A spokesman for the SLC said, “These exceptional balances are a function of government policy that in certain circumstances exempts specific courses from repeat study restrictions, permits funding for additional years of study, and results in SLC awarding additional years of funding when an individual demonstrates compelling personal reasons.”

TL;DR

The Student Loans Company (SLC) data reveals the highest outstanding student debt in the UK exceeds £230,000, with the largest repayment at £110,000. The average student debt upon graduation is £44,940. Student organizations find the figures alarming, questioning the university funding system. However, economists note that these high debts are unusual and not representative of most graduates. The FOI request by the BBC uncovered these staggering figures. The situation is exacerbated by tuition fees tripling over 15 years. Student loans are typically cleared after 30 years, regardless of the amount owed. This exceptional debt is attributed to government policies allowing exemptions and additional funding for certain courses and circumstances.
