UK Universities Face Major Decline Of International Students
UK News
Universities in the UK face a major decline in the admissions undertaken by international students. As reported by the Financial Times, this shift is expected with the recent trends in the higher education sector, which has portrayed a worrying image. The universities in the UK have seen a major drop in applications by non-EU students in the year 2023, with the figure reaching 484,000 as compared to the number of international students enrolled in 2021-22. This figure is double of what was seen in the previous year of 2022, with international student enrollment being 679,970. This sudden side-eye towards British educational institutions shows the change in the trend for global education and also shows a trend towards employment sectors and choices undertaken by international students.
This decline in international enrollment adds a worrying factor for UK universities. This also adds a target on the financial stability of these universities as education in UK for international students helps universities subsidies costs for domestic students. Popular institutions like the University of Lincoln have reduced their spending by 20%, as the University of York has reported a £24 million loss and a highly worrying 16% drop in international student enrollment. This highlights the worrying future challenges which will be faced by various universities in the UK.
Government Policies also heavily influence this decline in international students. Policies set by the government led by the British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak have also shown some major criticism. The strong stance on reducing migration, by policies which won’t let Postgraduate students bring family members into the UK and also reiterating the Graduate Visa routes, have also led to a major decline in the numbers of international student enrollment.
The office of the Prime Minister has a positive projection towards the tuition fees from non-EU students, constituting 24% of the total income by the year 2025-26. This has a sharp incline from the current 19%. However, some see a light in this current crisis for the steep decline in international student enrollment in the UK. The Telegraph also commented on this situation by stating that “the collapse of our universities is the best thing that could happen to Britain,” This also could be taken into account by showing a much-needed reevaluation of higher education undertaken by international students.
However, Universities have undertaken the task to make some retaliation to the financial pressure. The Guardian reported that the University of York has reduced its entry requirements to increase international student enrollment in order to tip the scales in this financial downfall. As reported by The Sunday Times, who did an undercover investigation revealed that 15 Russel Group universities are strongly promoting a one-year foundation program to increase international student enrollment, which will give international students an upper hand in entry into some of the most sought-after courses.
