The new presidential administration in the United States is most likely going to impact the visa and global immigration policies for students. USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) has rolled out several specific changes that might impact the students and international scholars studying in the USA. As Donald Trump is elected as the 47th President of the United States, he might go on to propose some of the unprecedented US student visa policy changes and restrictions on immigration and border security policies. Here is a detailed breakdown of how the global immigration policies have changed and how they might impact international students in the USA:

Overview of the New US Government’s Take on 2025 Immigration and Visa Policy

1. Enhanced Ideological Screening

With Trump returning to the picture, the US government is going to become more stringent in terms of ideological screenings. The students who are affiliated with Marxist views and totalitarian ideologies would be deliberately excluded. This is expected to be done by an increased scrutiny of students’ social media accounts and understanding their views. The USA might not take students from politically sensitive countries. This can be expected to be implemented by March 2025.

2. Adjustments to Employment Authorization Documents (EADs)

One favorable change in policy that might make it easier for international students in the USA is the recent adjustments in EADs (Employment Authorization Documents). USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) has extended the EAD validity to up to 5 years for all the applicants who are eligible. This will impact the students positively by providing them with greater stability when they are transitioning to work after completing their post-graduation.

3. Modifications to OPT and STEM OPT

STEM OPT, (Optional Practical Training Extension) for STEM students which is a temporary training for students with F-1 visa who have gained a degree in either Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics. The reporting intervals for the same have been extended to a year from 6 months. The unemployment allowance is also extended from 150 days to 180 days according to the new US student visa policy. This eases the administrative burdens on international students in USA. This also offers safety for students who are looking out for jobs during economic turbulences in the country.

4. Increased Fees for H-1B and Green Card Applications

While there are some positive changes in the US student visa, some changes can come as an outright shock to the students. One such is the increased fees for H-1B visas and green card applications. The H-1B student visa fee has now risen to $215 and there is a marginal increase in Green Card application fees as well. This may stretch students’ budgets thin.

5. Reinstatement and Expansion of Travel Bans

The US Government once Trump takes over the President's Office might reinstate travel bans for specific countries. This includes Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Myanmar, Sudan, Tanzania, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen, and Somalia. This might put some students at a disadvantage as this might complicate their admission procedures and hinder their return trips. This will also negatively affect the universities in the USA by heavily impacting their diversified approach towards student selection.

Tips for Students: What Should Students Do?

If you are a student planning to travel to the USA for further studies amind the US student visa policy changes, here are some things you should take care of immediately to avoid any last-minute changes.

1. Plan a strategic date to travel to the US, try to travel before 21st January’25 to avoid any hindrances in your admissions.
2. If you are planning to move to the USA this year, map out visa processes, send in applications, and track those applications from time to time.
3. Stay up to date with the recent US student visa news and trends and keep in touch with or consult your institutional immigration advisors.
