The Latest UK news is looking into the recent changes in the York University enrolment eligibility criteria. The International Student News has picked the new progress as the international student community and industry experts are divided on it. There are many leading agencies and industry experts pointing out the short comings of the York University enrolment criteria revisions. Some students have also commented on their reservations regarding the new changes. However, the university has backed the change in the eligibility criteria with the need to include international students missing out on acceptance due to minor grade fallouts.

The requirement of the minimum grades has been revised to B/B/C at A level in order to be eligible for admission. The eligibility criteria for the postgraduate programs has been brought to a 2:2 degree level as well. These changes are seen to be a response by York University in order to safeguard themselves from the loss in admissions they have been currently experiencing. The admissions of students in UK universities dropped heavily after the USA and Australia opened their boundaries to Covid-19.

The Russel Group, which includes 24 top-ranking institutions has seen a collective drop in the admission rates from international students. The group analyses the drop as a result of a fall in the percentage of students from India and Nigeria. The loss in admission numbers has also resulted in financial loss for York University and other English universities in the UK. The loss on fee per student stands at £2,500 per student until the January 2024 intake and will supposedly grow to £5,000 by 2029-2030.

The financial crunch due to the drop in applications is being seen as the major cause behind York University enrolment criteria changes. According to the annual report and data, the university has seen an annual increase in revenue. However, despite the annual income growth, the university suffered a total loss of £13.3M.

According to the latest UK news, York University took the ground-breaking decision to attract more international students to it’s campus for higher studies. However, based on the current international student news, the current students feel not quite confident about the new eligibility criteria. One of the students said, “The prestige of the University may suffer due to the decision. It might also discourage students from choosing the institute.”

Another report from the Higher Education Statistics Agency, “The non-EU students are likely to receive lower grades as compared to the domestic students”. Thus, lowering the eligibility criteria might have an effect on the overall performance of the programs. The new rule is applicable to all the courses with some exceptions.

York University has maintained its stand and has provided credible reasons for bringing into effect the revised eligibility criteria. The university is keen on maintaining its financial sustainability by opening up its doors further to international students. The point of attention to financial sustainability comes in place due to the cap of £9,000 in fees for domestic students.

The University also denied the change in the grade criteria and said, “It remains as advertised”. The Institute also said, “The York University enrolment changes are to make the admission process more inclusive. The update in the York University eligibility criteria is also brought about by the top-ranking institute in the light of “many international students with offers missing their grades and, thus, not getting a chance for admission”, as said per the university.

The latest UK news throws a spotlight on the fact that these updates on the part of the institutions are quite positive for the PBSA market. The need for student housing is the highest ever and will keep growing if the education system makes some significant changes like this one.
