A Guide To UCAS Adjustments
Because settling for less is so last year.

Disclaimer: This is just an Informational Blog. UCAS Adjustment has been cancelled, so from 2022 onwards, you cannot apply for UCAS Adjustment.

‍

If you are a student in the UK considering higher education, this guide is here to give you valuable insights and information about the UCAS Adjustment process. Imagine this, you are all set to go to your chosen university, but you got better grades than you expected, and now you want to reconsider your course or university. Is there anything you can do? Yes! UCAS Adjustment allows you to reapply to courses that have higher entry requirements! In this blog, we will tell you about what UCAS Adjustment is, how it works, what the eligibility is, how to apply, what universities have it and what the deadlines are. While Adjustment is no longer available, understanding how it worked can help you explore current options like Clearing Plus.

What Was A UCAS Adjustment?

In case you had exceeded the requirements of your firm's offer and completed the requirements for adjustment, you could apply for a different course or university. You wouldn’t lose your firm offer if you applied for any programme at any university where you met the entrance requirements. In case you got better grades than expected, you could trade up your university to a higher-ranked one. UCAS was an optional choice; students needed much thought and careful consideration before making such a major decision.

How Did the UCAS Adjustment Work?

Having all this information is necessary when deciding whether to opt for it or not. The UCAS Adjustment takes place through the UCAS Track System. The students used to get five days, including weekends, to use it. This starts on A-level results day or when the student's Conditional firm (CF) changes to Unconditional firm (UF), whichever comes later. You would only get the days between when you receive your Unconditional Firm to August 3. If you got it in less than five days before that, use Adjustment and find another university to send an offer to.

What Was UCAS Adjustment Eligibility?

UCAS Adjustment was something that could not be applied to everyone. You had to meet certain UCAS eligibility criteria to apply. To meet the criteria of UCAS Adjustment eligibility, here were certain things to keep in mind, such as:

  1. You have an unconditional firm choice after being accepted into your firm choice.
  2. Let's say you exceeded the conditions offered by the firm, including subject-specific grade requirements; you will then be eligible for UCAS Adjustment to potentially find a spot at another higher-ranked university.

How Students Applied for UCAS Adjustment

UCAS Adjustment was a process within the UK Higher Education system that allowed students to explore other courses with higher requirements apart from those initially offered. Students were given an opportunity to reconsider their options while maintaining their conditional offers.

Once received, students could register for Adjustment through UCAS Track. During the UCAS Adjustment Period, students could contact universities to inquire about courses that match their requirements. Students also had the option to apply for UCAS Clearing, which was for students who thought they had another shot at a university they thought they could get into! The UCAS Adjustment process was a very beneficial tool for students who had exceeded their expectations and wanted to explore what else was out there. There was a process to follow and information to understand before you could apply for UCAS Adjustment. Here was the way to apply for UCAS Adjustment:

  1. Adjustment registration was available on Track. Your initial firm choice was still safe while you looked for a new place, and it will remain so until you confirm to go somewhere else.
  2. Unlike Clearing, Adjustment did not include a vacancy list. Therefore, you must check university websites and contact admissions offices at the universities you were interested in to discuss possible placements. Tell them immediately that you were applying through Adjustment and have your personal ID number ready.
  3. If you were using Adjustment, you could contact any university you chose, even if they reject your first application (although there's no guarantee they'll have any openings).
  4. If you were given a spot, consider it and let them know if you still want to accept it.
  5. When you decide to accept an offer, and the university confirms it, they will update your UCAS Track screen to reflect your switch to the new programme. Ensure the university giving you the position knows you need time to consider an Adjustment offer. Once the university places the offer on your Track, your initial agreement will be automatically cancelled. You won't be able to change your mind.

What Were The UCAS Adjustment Deadlines?

The UCAS Adjustment period officially began on A-Level Results Day, which typically occurs in mid-to late August. You would receive your exam results on this day. You had five consecutive calendar days starting that day to participate in Adjustment. You can look into alternative programmes and colleges during this Adjustment period, contact universities to ask about openings and express interest in securing a spot through Adjustment. It's crucial to take the initiative and quickly get in touch with universities.

The usual deadline for obtaining an alternate offer through Adjustment was the fifth day of the UCAS Adjustment period. You would not be able to switch universities through the Adjustment procedure after this date. It was advised to check the official UCAS website frequently or contact UCAS directly to stay informed about the exact times for Adjustment. They would offer the most exact and up-to-date details on each application cycle's deadlines. Consider your plan of action carefully and fully use the Adjustment opportunity within the allotted time. However, if you had missed your deadline - don't worry. Go through our Guide To Late UCAS Applications blog to know what to do next!

How Did You Choose The Right University?

Not only was deciding to take UCAS Adjustment a big decision, but it was also important to make the right choice when picking your university. Students were strongly advised to think through their decision and conduct extensive research before proceeding with the Adjustment. Here are some points to be considered before making a choice:

  1. On results day, discuss your alternatives with a teacher or career counsellor present.
  2. Ask many questions regarding the course, as it can differ from the one at the university of your first pick.
  3. If you can, visit the universities you are interested in, or if not, search online for open houses.
  4. Find out from the universities what choices there are for transportation and lodging.
  5. Take some time to consider how you will make your payments and pay off your student loans
  6. Research the city you will be moving to and ensure it is the right fit.
  7. Form an excellent Reference Letter which helps universities gain insights into your student profile!

‍

What Replaced UCAS Adjustment?

UCAS Adjustment was replaced by the self-release option through UCAS Hub. This new system allows students to decline their confirmed university place if they change their mind or get better grades than expected. After doing this, they can apply for other courses through Clearing.

This change was made to simplify the process. Instead of having a separate Adjustment route, students now use Clearing to explore better or more suitable options. It gives them more flexibility and control, without the confusion of a separate system.

‍

In conclusion, it was important for students to handle UCAS Adjustments carefully to get the best out of their university experience. If done properly, it helped them find better opportunities and improve their studies. But if rushed or done without thought, it could have caused stress, missed chances, and hurt their progress.

This was the Guide to UCAS Adjustments with all the information you need about the topic. Even though UCAS has been discontinued, you can still read all about it on our blog. If you wish to gather more insights regarding UCAS Adjustments and other application programs, please go through this blog to know more! You can also read our blog on UCAS open days.

UCAS stopped the Adjustment service because very few students used it, and it added extra complexity for both applicants and universities. Instead, from autumn 2021 onward, UCAS introduced a self‑release option “Decline My Place” so students who did better than expected could enter Clearing (now with support like Clearing Plus) more easily. This change simplified the system while offering a similar opportunity in a more streamlined way
