Founded in 1983, the Chevening Programme awards international scholarships to students pursuing education in the United Kingdom. The Chevening scholarship is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth office of the British Government. The programme was created as a way for the UK to build a network of connections with some of the brightest minds from around the world. 

The Chevening Scholarship fully funds a one-year master’s program in any course in the UK. The scholarship looks for bright students with passion, talent and leadership skills who are looking to make a positive change in the world. The Chevening scholarship has an alumni network of 50,000 brilliant individuals from over a hundred countries. 

Chevening Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

There is a list of Chevening scholarship requirements applicants must meet before they can begin their application. Your application will be rejected if you do not meet all the criteria required, so ensure that you are an eligible candidate before you start working on your application. To be eligible for the Chevening scholarship, applicants must: 

  • Be from a Chevening Eligible country: The program lists Chevening eligible countries on its website. The applicant must be from one of these countries to apply. There are approximately 160 countries eligible for this scholarship. However, one notable exception is the United States of America. 
  • Agree to return to their home country after their program: Once your course is over, you must return to your home country for a minimum of two years. 
  • Have work experience: All applicants must possess a minimum of two years of work experience. 
  • Have an acceptance letter from a UK university: Applicants must have received an unconditional offer from at least one of the courses they have applied for by mid-July of the year that your course begins. 
  • Apply to three master's programs in the UK: All applicants must have applied to at least three master's programs. You can find a list of eligible courses here. Applicants can apply to different courses in the same university or similar courses from different universities. Some additional course requirements are:
  • Courses must begin in the fall (September/ October intake)
  • Courses cannot be research-focused MRes programs
  • Courses must be full-time and not part-time or online
  • Courses cannot be more than 12 months long
  • Courses cannot be less than nine months long
  • Courses cannot be part of a PhD program

You will not be eligible to apply for the scholarship if you:

  • Have British citizenship or dual British citizenship. 
  • Have already studied in the UK with a scholarship funded by the British Government. 
  • Have been employed, or are currently an employee of Her Majesty’s Government.
  • Have been employed or are currently an employee of any of Chevenings partner organisations 

Chevening Scholarship Application 

Before we explain the steps, timeline and deadlines of the application, let us take you through different application process requirements. 

Application Requirements 

The Chevening scholarship application can be completed and submitted online through their online application system (OAS). Each country has its own application form, meaning that the form for the Chevening Scholarship for India and Argentina will be different. 

  • Application form: the application form can be found online and will contain a set of questions for applicants to answer. Each answer will need to be 100-500 words long. The form must be filled in, in English.
  • References: Along with your applications, you will be required to submit the names of two references. If you are selected for an interview, you will need both your references to submit letters of recommendation for you. You will ensure that the reference letters are sent by the deadline and submitted to the correct portal. Reference letters must be written in English. 
  • Documents required: In addition to your application, you will need to submit scanned copies of original documents like your transcripts, offer letters and passport. Ensure all your documents are submitted online by the deadlines and are in the required format (JPG/PNG/PDF). 

Application Timeline 

The entire process, from start to finish, takes around eight months to complete, starting in August and ending in September of the following year. 

  • Applications open in early August 
  • Applications close in early November
  • Applications are reviewed from November to December
  • Applicants are shortlisted for interviews in February
  • Deadline to send in references and other relevant documents February to April
  • Interviews are scheduled from February to April
  • Results Announced from June onwards
  • Send in an offer letter from your university by  mid-July
  • Course start date: September to October 

Application Questions

The application form has four main questions that students must answer with a short essay. All answers have a 500-word limit. Here are the different topics of each question and some tips on answering them.

Question 1: Networking Skills

  • Talk about how you cultivate and maintain relationships with figures of authority in professional circles.
  • Elaborate on how you have kept relationships going regardless of age, gender, economic background and ethnicity. Use a few examples to bring a personal touch to your essay.
  • Mention ways you plan on improving your communication strategies to strengthen your relationships.   

Question 2: Leadership Qualities

  • Explain the different leadership opportunities you’ve held and how you’ve dealt with managing and working in a team. 
  • Mention any problems you’ve faced while holding a leadership position and how you were able to overcome them and what you’ve learned from them.
  • Use examples wherever you can to increase the credibility of your answer, and try to use recent examples.

Question 3: Career Plans

  • Talk about your future career plans and how and why you’ve chosen that particular path, how you believe your career can help better people’s lives.
  • How has your previous work experience played a role in helping you achieve your future career goals, or helped you better understand what you want to achieve in the future.
  • Highlight your skills, any notable achievements and your professional working style when you answer and give the reader a clear picture of your past work. 

Question 4: Why the UK

  • Elaborate on why you believe that the UK is the perfect destination for you to pursue your degree. 
  • Explain what the UK has that you can’t find in other countries with similar courses and what drew you to the UK above other options.
  • Mention how your career goals align with getting an education in the UK and why you believe that an international education will benefit you. 

Apart from the few pointers mentioned above, its also important to ensure that your answers are unique and will make an impression on the reader. Try to infuse as many personal details and elements as you can so your essay has a strong sense of your personality. Common Mistakes 

Since the application process is long and covers many different steps, it is possible to make a few errors. Make sure to double-check your application for any mistakes before you submit it. Do not miss out on any elements of your application, and ensure that all your details are accurate. Some other common mistakes to avoid while filing your application are: 

  • Do not repeat answers. Ensure that there is no repetition within your responses to different questions in your application. Each answer should be unique and highlight another aspect of yourself and your journey. 
  • Do not plagiarise your content. None of your content should be plagiarised and must be written entirely by you. All applications are run through plagiarism software, and the applicant will be disqualified if any plagiarism is detected.   
  • Use English throughout your application. The entire application must be filled out in English. The application form, reference letters, and other written content must all be in English. Any applications not written in English will not be considered.

Chevening Fellowship

Not to be confused with the Chevening scholarship, the Chevening fellowship is another award offered by the Chevening program. The fellowship is aimed at working professionals who want an opportunity to increase their professional network and gain knowledge in their field by pursuing short, informative courses in the UK.

What expenses does the Chevening Scholarship cover?

The Chevening scholarship covers many costs for its recipients. These include:

  • Tuition fees
  • Travel costs to and from your country to the UK
  • Visa application costs 
  • Arrival allowance 
  • Departure allowance
  • Monthly stipend for living expenses during your time in the UK 
  • Covers cost  for a TB test if required

Can you only apply to a Chevening partner university?

There is a list of Chevening partner universities that you can choose to apply to. However, you are still eligible for this postgraduate scholarship if you do not apply to one of these universities. The benefit of applying to a partner university is that you will be increased networking opportunities. The amount of funding will remain the same regardless of the university. What are the dates for the Chevening scholarship 2022 application?

Application for the 2023 fall intake will open on August 2nd 2022, and close on November 2nd, 2022.
