Laundry Tips For Students
Today’s Lecture: Conquer Laundry!

Hey there, students! Uni is an exciting chapter but within the chapter, laundry is inevitable. If you don't properly take care of your clothes, you will learn some unwanted laundry lessons. You may be asking yourself, 'How to do laundry?' and searching for helpful laundry tips because of the doubts. The good news is that we are here to make laundry day a little less painful with some fun and easy laundry tips for students!

Laundry Tips & Tricks That Actually Work!

The most tiresome job as a student is to do laundry religiously and also to find the right laundry tips and tricks. Here are some of the best laundry tips for students:

1. Separate your clothes

Student life is all about organisation. From your books to your lectures and your laundry! The key to laundry organization is by separating your clothes. You don't want to end up with pink socks and a grey shirt. Sort your laundry into piles of whites, darks, and colors. Pro laundry tip: if you're feeling adventurous, you can even sort by fabric type!

2. Check the labels (no, not your social media labels)

The ultimate laundry tip for students (and a general organisation tip) - check the labels on your clothes. Much like your university assignments guidelines, the care labels shouldn't be ignored. The labels will tell you the washing and drying instructions. Every material needs different care, so don't ignore the care labels, or you'll end up with shrunken sweaters and faded jeans.

3. Use the right laundry detergent

Laundry detergent keeps our clothes smelling fresh for those morning lectures, but here are some laundry tips for students that are worth knowing about; Don't use too much laundry detergent as this will cause bad odour and wear down the washing machine. Detergent can be overwhelming with all those fancy names and scents. But don't worry, just make sure you use the right amount for your clothes, and you'll feel like you're at the top of the class!

4. Don't overload the washing machine

One of the biggest laundry tips for students is to make sure your washing machine isn't too loaded. You want to avoid putting too much pressure and heavy load on your machine as this causes appliance failure. It's tempting to cram as much as you can into the washing machine, but trust us; your clothes will thank you if you don't. Leave some room for them to move around and get cleaned evenly.

5. Pre-treat stains

We know the feeling. You're enjoying a nice hot coffee to get the day started, but suddenly, you notice dark coffee stains on your favorite shirt. Your coffee delight has turned into coffee despair. Luckily, we do have some laundry tips for you if you do notice stains. Simply pre-treat any stains before you put them in the washing machine. When you notice the stains, simply run cold water to dilute them. If the coffee stain is dry, you'll need to get a clean cloth to wipe it and then apply a few drops of liquid detergent to remove the coffee stain.

6. Ditch the dryer

The dryer works fast, but it does tend to ruin clothes by shrinking them if you're not too careful (see our laundry tips about reading care labels). Hang dry your clothes if you can! The days are getting longer, and the sun is shining a lot more, so take full advantage of it by hanging your clothes outside! Your favorite shirts will remain looking smart and well-dried! Plus, don't underestimate the fresh ascent that air drying gives your clothes!

7. Get your iron on

Learning about laundry tips is important but don't forget about ironing too! Ironing can be a pain, but it's worth it for those special occasions or important presentations. Just make sure you use the right setting for your fabric and don't burn your clothes (or yourself).

8. Ask questions about the washing machines

If you don't ask, you won't learn any laundry tips. Students living on campus will be given a tour around the university, so don't miss the chance to ask questions about the washing machines and payment system. Even a question as simple as 'how to do laundry' will help settle your nerves and give you laundry tips in the process!

9. Keep it clean

It's all well and good that you heeded our laundry tips, but also remember to clean your area. Your clothes may be clean, but if the laundry room is left slightly dirty after you leave, then you will get raised eyebrows and annoyed flatmates. You study with students and share a kitchen with them so it's only fair the level of respect continues by ensuring the laundry room is left clean and not messy.

10. Use a Laundry Mesh Bag

I'm sure you've lost socks after a washing cycle. We're not judging - we've all been there. Using a laundry mesh bag is your best friend if you want to avoid losing socks and protect your clothes! A laundry mesh bag is a net that is flexible and durable. The best thing about the mesh is that it is heat-resistant and allows water to move around freely. Your delicate fabrics will be preserved for much longer! In addition, you can also wash your trainers in a mesh bag without worrying about the laces knotting up - causing an untangled mess!

11. Use a Laundry Service

The life of a university student is busy. One minute, you're studying, relying on coffee to get through the lectures, and the next minute, you're googling 'Laundry tips for students.' For students, free time is precious, and sometimes, there isn't time to do laundry. The chore itself feels never-ending, with the piling up of dirty clothes, washing them, drying them, and then neatly folding them up.

However, there are laundry services like LaundryHeap that are there to help you do your laundry so you don't have to. If you ever feel like your laundry is piling up like a mountain, just contact a service that will pick up your laundry on the same day and then deliver it back to you within 24 hours - all clean, all fresh, and all ready for your next lecture!

12. Stick To The Laundry Schedule

In university, timing is everything. You need to manage your time when it comes to assignments, studying, waking up, and, yes, you guessed it, laundry. Try not to do laundry spontaneously because, chances are, the machines at your student accommodation will not always be available.

Top 3 Laundry Timings As A Student?

Okay, so one of the best laundry tips for students is to find out what's the best time and day to do it and stick to the schedule. Below are the best laundry timings students can follow:

1. Weekday Serves The Best!

When you are a student living with your college mates or friends, you share the laundry service. Weekdays are the best days for students as most of the residents are away for college.

2. Early In The Morning Works Too!

If you are an early riser, you have a one-up already. Spare some time in the morning routine for laundry, and you are all set. It is also one of the best laundry tips for students.

3. Late Night Laundry Is Also A Thing!

Believe it or not, doing laundry late at night has its hype among college students. If you like studying through the night, use break time for laundry. One of the most amazing tips in the laundry for students. Isn't it?

A bonus laundry tip for students: sign up for a notification system at your university. This way, whenever machines are available, you will be notified through text or email.

There you have it, folks! Now that we've lectured you on how to do laundry in university, you'll be a laundry pro in no time. With these laundry tips for students, you might even start enjoying laundry day (okay, maybe that's a stretch). But at least you'll have fresh, clean clothes to wear while you study for that exam or hit up the campus party scene. Happy washing!

Suppose you've found our laundry tips for students' articles helpful. In that case, we also have blogs related to students regarding tips on time management, health, tips on moving abroad preparation, and stress management. But to avoid any sort of stress, book your student accommodation, which offers laundry facilities, before shifting abroad!

Frequently Asked Questions

How many clothes do you need for university?

Each student has different priorities when it comes to preferences. As a general guide, we recommend not bringing too much clothes and keep it simple. Usually 3-5 t-shirts, 2 jumpers, 2 jeans, 2 pajamas and 1 coat will be enough.

What clothes should you wear to lectures?

Everyone’s fashion sense is different and fortunately, there isn’t a universal dress code when it comes to university lectures. However, keep your outfits casual, respectful and smart. A simple t-shirt, jeans or smart casual clothes would be good!

What if I can’t find the right student accommodation?

If you are finding it difficult to get a student accommodation booked, get in touch with amber! Once you’ve placed an inquiry and told us your preferences, one of our booking executives will get in touch with you and help you find the accommodation that suits you the best!

When should I start looking to book my accommodation?

Generally, you should give yourself enough time to prepare and plan. So around 4-5 months before your course starts. It should give you enough time to research the area well and also know what to bring with you.

How many times do I need to re-wear my clothes before washing them?

As a rule of thumb, you can wear jeans for quite a while (unless they get very dirty). Wear shirts 2-3 times before washing them. For more hygienic clothes like underwear and workout clothes, wear only once and then wash.
