Section-wise SAT Syllabus and Exam Pattern 

The SAT test format will test how ready you are for the college courses. It is a multistage adaptive test where you get multiple-choice questions, except for mathematics. Some Asian universities also require the SAT score to evaluate a student’s writing, mathematical, and verbal skills. Let’s take a look at the section-wise SAT syllabus. 

SAT Exam Syllabus and Format 

The SAT exam subjects include the courses covered in the school curriculum, and the syllabus includes two sections: 

1. Mathematics 

The SAT pattern for the mathematics section is divided into two modules that are timed separately. In both modules, you will find
20 operational questions and
two pretext questions. Both the modules are also given
35 minutes each.

2. Reading and writing 

Just like the mathematics section, the RW SAT pattern is divided into two modules, Reading and Writing, and both are timed separately. In both modules, you will find
25 operational questions and
two pretext questions, for a total of
54 questions! Both the modules are also
32 minutes long, so you better start working on your timings, here are some tips to prepare for SAT that will help you!

The SAT exam format relies on a multistage adaptive exam that tests your reading comprehension, language, and maths skills. The digital SAT format follows a shorter test duration of 2 hours 14 minutes with a 10-minute exam break.

The SAT exam pattern has 98 questions to answer, so you get 1 minute 30 seconds for one single question. If the time is over for the first section, the second module automatically starts right away. 

The current SAT exam format has transitioned into a simpler format. The RW and maths sections are calculated section-wise; therefore, the SAT exam is scored out of 1600 marks. Unlike the previous SAT pattern, there is no essay for candidates.

SAT Digital RW Exam Pattern and Syllabus   

The digital SAT syllabus for the reading and writing section involves selected academic and literary texts through which the test assesses a student’s comprehension and language skills. The candidate’s rhetorical and critical reasoning skills are assessed through the provided structured texts on the question paper. The following are four content domains of the reading and writing section:  

1. Information & Ideas

The SAT analyses a student’s interpretation skills to bring out central ideas and details. You can practise using passages and infographics to indicate information and ideas.. This entire section focuses on your reading comprehension, reasoning, and analytical skills. 

2. Craft & Structure

The SAT exam format also includes highly utilised academic words and phrases to assess whether students identify the meaning of a context. You will also need to evaluate the text structure and purpose to establish a connection between the sentences. Basically, the domain focuses on your vocabulary, reading comprehension, synthesis, and reasoning skills. 

3. Expression of Ideas 

The SAT English syllabus assesses the candidate’s ability to rhetorical synthesis transitions. So, the purpose of this section is to evaluate your skill to answer precisely without using heavy words and enhance the flow. Also, the syllabus involves how well you can craft introductions, conclusions, and transitions. 

4. Standard English Conventions 

The SAT English syllabus includes identifying a student’s grammatical skills. You will also need to demonstrate your ability to recognise errors in a sentence and incomplete sentences. The syllabus also focuses on correcting punctuation and unnecessary or missing commas. 

SAT Digital Maths Exam Pattern & Syllabus  

The SAT maths syllabus revolves around the integral elements of geometry, algebra, trigonometry, data analysis, advanced maths, and problem-solving. The syllabus for maths includes student-produced responses and multiple-choice questions to show if you are fluent with the necessary skills, concepts, and practices.

SAT Syllabus Changes 

Previously, the SAT focused on assessing writing and reading in two different sections; however, you can now find only one section for both. The current SAT exam does not have a separate section for science, similar to RW and maths. However, you will find passages for science in the reading and writing section.  

The SAT exam pattern for the SAT General Test evaluates an applicant on their general knowledge and critical reasoning skills. Earlier, the SAT Subject Test assessed students on the basis of specific subjects which they selected for specialisation. However, the SAT Subject Test has been discontinued now. 

In the previous syllabus, mathematics had two sections; candidates could use calculators for one section and not for the other one. However, the digital SAT exam allows calculators for the mathematics section. A digital calculator, Bluebook App, is available now, eliminating the need for carrying a calculator.
