Australia Announces a New Student Visa Fee Tier for ELICOS Applicants

Key Points:

  • Australia has increased its student visa fees once again from 1 July 2026.
  • A new visa pricing tier had been introduced for students enrolling in ELICOS and non-award courses.
  • Standard student visa applicants will now pay AUD 2,500, while ELICOS students will pay AUD 2,050.
  • The government says the changes are aimed at strengthening the integrity of Australia’s migration system.
  • Education providers have expressed concerns that higher costs could discourage international students.
  • The latest changes continue Australia’s recent trend of tightening its international education policies.

Australia Raises Student Visa Fees Again

Australia has announced another increase in Australia student visa fees, with the revised changes coming into effect from 1 July 2026. Under the new fee structure, students applying for a standard Student Visa (Subclass 500) will now pay AUD 2,5000, up from AUD 2,000.

For the first time, the government has also introduced a separate pricing tier for students enrolling in ELICOS visa (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) and non-award programs. These applicants will pay AUD 2,050 instead of the full student visa fee.

New ELICOS Pricing Tier Offers Partial Relief

The introduction of a separate fee for ELICOS students has been welcomed by some education providers, as language courses are generally shorter and less expensive than degree programs. Industry groups had argued that charging the same visa fee for short-term English courses made Australia less competitive compared to other study destinations.

Although the new AUD 2,050 fee is lower than the standard student visa charge, many stakeholders believe it is still high enough to discourage prospective students. English language providers have already reported a decline in applications following previous visa fee increases.

Why Australia Is Increasing Visa Costs

The Australian government says the higher student visa fee increase is part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s migration system and maintain the quality of the international education sector. Over the past two years, Australia has introduced several policy changes, including stricter visa rules, higher financial requirements, and increased scrutiny of student applications.

Officials believe these measures will help ensure that student visas are used for genuine study purposes while supporting the long-term sustainability of the education sector.

What This Means for International Students

The latest changes mean that students planning to study in Australia should carefully factor visa expenses into their overall budget. While the dedicated ELICOS visa pricing offers some savings for English language students, Australia remains one of the most expensive study destinations in terms of visa application charges.

Students should also stay informed about the latest immigration policies before applying, as visa requirements and fees continue to evolve. For those considering Australia as their study destination, understanding these costs early can help with better financial planning and smoother application preparation.
