Melbourne University Ranking Drops as UNSW Becomes Australia's Top University

The Melbourne University ranking has declined in the latest QS World University Rankings 2027, with the University of New South Wales (UNSW) overtaking it as Australia's highest-ranked institution for the first time.
UNSW climbed one place to 19th globally, while the University of Melbourne dropped to 22nd after continuing its downward trend from previous years. The latest rankings evaluated more than 1,500 higher education institutions across 106 countries and territories.
UNSW Claims Australia's Top Position
UNSW's rise marks a significant milestone for Australian higher education. The Sydney-based university improved its global standing by one place compared to last year and has climbed 30 positions since 2017.
The university received strong scores for employment outcomes, sustainability, academic reputation, and international research partnerships. Vice-Chancellor Professor Attila Brungs said the recognition would create greater opportunities for students, faculty, and global collaboration.
According to Brungs, becoming Australia's highest-ranked university strengthens the institution's ability to expand its international influence and research impact.
Melbourne University Ranking Falls Again
The latest Melbourne University ranking reflects another year of decline. After being ranked 12th globally in 2024, the university dropped to 19th in the previous edition before falling further to 22nd this year.
Despite the lower position, interim Vice-Chancellor Professor Glyn Davis said the university remains committed to strengthening global partnerships, delivering excellence in research and teaching, and preparing students for a rapidly evolving workforce.
Australian Universities Show Strong Overall Performance
Although Melbourne slipped, Australian universities performed well overall in this year's rankings.
Among Australia's 43 recognised universities, 37 were included in the rankings—the highest number ever. More than half of the previously ranked Australian universities improved their positions, with nine institutions reaching their best-ever global rankings.
The country's performance outpaced several major education markets. Around 58% of ranked Australian universities improved, compared with 21% in the United Kingdom and 12% in the United States.
QS Highlights Strengths and Future Challenges
QS Quacquarelli Symonds credited Australia's improved academic reputation, international outlook, and research performance for its stronger showing this year.
However, the rankings also highlighted several long-term concerns. Rising student visa costs, increasing visa refusals, teaching capacity, graduate outcomes, and student satisfaction remain areas requiring attention.
Jessica Turner, CEO of QS Quacquarelli Symonds, said maintaining Australia's competitive position will require continued investment in student experience, employability, and skills development, particularly as artificial intelligence reshapes the global workforce.

For international students, the rankings demonstrate the continued strength of Australian universities in research quality, employer reputation, and global partnerships.
