Strict Rules: UK'S Derby Councillors to eliminate rising HMO issues

HMO (Houses of Multiple Occupancy) rules and regulations for landlords are about to get strict, as per the latest HMO news. The Councillor is introducing Article 4 Direction under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 in the city. These new HMO management regulations will be introduced in order to cut down on a few problems that are frequently faced by society in general. According to HMO news, rules for houses of multiple occupancy will give the authority the power to control the number of HMOs. 

Furthermore, the new HMO rules and regulations are also focused on providing a better experience to residents and their neighbours as well. This includes limiting noise and providing better parking space and bin storage. These rules for HMOs will be imposed in wards like Arboretum and Abbey as some residents showed concern over a few things in HMOs. Residents have noticed concerns, such as low maintenance and anti-social behavior including fly-tipping and deterioration of buildings. 

According to Shiraz Khan, cabinet member for housing, property and regulatory services stated that “are a great housing option for lots of people, provided they are of a high quality. We want our communities to thrive and make sure that tenants in HMOs live in safe and decent homes. It’s also important to remember that currently, we don’t have an option to assess whether premises are suitable for conversion to smaller HMOs.”

Furthermore, he added that for some smaller HMOs, rooms wouldn’t be approved if they have to go through the planning process. Hence, if the cabinet approves the proposal in a meeting that will be held on 10th January, there’s going to be a public consultation as well.
