In the latest update about the Australia student visa news today, the Australian government has decided on relaxing work restrictions for international students. The government has introduced work restrictions for international students in Australia effective 1 July 2023. These Australian international student work restrictions are a way to ensure that the students are fulfilling their purpose of coming to the country for which the visa is granted.

This Australia student visa news has confirmed that with the latest imposition of the work restrictions policy, all student visa holders, including dependent family visa holders, must abide by the mandatory work restrictions on student visas.

Under this, mandatory conditions such as the 8105 will be applied for the primary visa applicants whereas condition 8104 will be applied to dependent visas. Both conditions are applied to put a limit on the number of working hours for students. Let’s take a closer look at both the conditions.

  • Condition 8105 - With the recent leniency on the Australian international student work restrictions, students can now work up to 48 hours per fortnight whereas the earlier policy allowed students to only work up to 40 hours per fortnight while the course is in session.
  • Condition 8104 - Under this, the dependent applicants are getting a relaxation of working hours exceeding 40 hours to 48 hours per fortnight. However, dependents are restricted to start work till the time the primary applicants haven’t commenced their studies.

Fortnight is considered as a 14-day cycle which begins on Monday and ends on the second following Sunday. To avoid exceeding working hours, visa holders are advised to not work more than 24 hours in a week (Monday to Sunday).

Additionally, as per the latest news on Australia student visa news today, international student work restrictions, visa holders can work full-time hours when the course is out of session. This will allow students to put in extra hours for work without impacting their ongoing sessions.

Furthermore, there are certain exemptions to the work restrictions for international students in Australia. Such as primary visa holders who have commenced their master's in research or doctorate can work for unlimited hours after starting their postgraduate course.
