Student Travel in Porto

Porto is small. Depending on what your daily routine looks like and your commute, you can quickly get through a week without using transport too much.

A metro network connects the city centre as a whole. It is inexpensive and straightforward to use, with tickets starting at €1.20. Pay close attention when purchasing your tickets because a slightly complicated zonal system is in place, and different stations may require separate tickets according to the distance.

Buses can be used with the same "Andante" (walker) pass as the metro and are especially useful when crossing the river.

Uber rides, too, are very convenient, and a ride back from a night out will typically cost around €5-8.

Student Lifestyle and Living in Porto

Porto is rich in culture and history, which most students will appreciate exploring and experiencing. Aside from the low cost of studying and the high quality of student housing, your social life as a student in Porto will be thriving.

Queima das Fitas began as a small farewell celebration for graduating students but has since grown into a full-fledged festival. Annual celebrations typically include a serenade, a massive student parade that effectively shuts down Porto, a large music festival featuring well-known Portuguese and international artists, and a fantastic party atmosphere throughout the city (usually with outrageous amounts of alcohol added to the mix). It takes place every May and is one of the highlights of student life in Porto.

Students can try out The Piolho Bar, a place of academic tradition, should be on every student's list of places to visit while in Porto. It began as a typical bakery but quickly became a small must-see for drinks and snacks. It is so well-known that the name of the old bakery is now used to describe the entire neighbourhood.
