George Birkbeck created the Birkbeck University of London, a public research institution, in 1823. It is affiliated with the University of London, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, the Commonwealth Universities, and the European University Association. The London Mechanic's Institute was the previous name of the institution. It began allowing admission of female students in 1830, which led to a surge in enrollment.
The university's campus is home to a number of teaching hospitals, research facilities, and labs. On the property are also the Department of Humanities and English and the School of Arts. Additionally, it houses student housing halls and offers all the amenities they need. The campus also houses the Peltz Gallery and Birkbeck Cinema. A new campus in East London opened its doors in 2013. Additionally, a lot of the institutes were built on this campus.
