Located in Bloomsbury London, England, Birkbeck, the University of London also known as BBK is a public research university and a constituent college of the federal University of London which has its’ origin dated back to 1823. Founded as London Mechanics' Institute, by Sir George Birkbeck, the institute, later on, changed its name to the Birkbeck Literary and Scientific Institution in the year 1866.However, in 1907, the institution shortened its name from Birkbeck Literary and Scientific Institution to Birkbeck College and in the year 1913, the University of London conducted a review and recommended that Birkbeck become a constituent college. Birkbeck, being part of the University of London, received its Royal charter in the year 1926 and Birkbeck also secured its own independent degree awarding powers, in the month of July 2012 by the Privy Council. Birbeck currently caters a total of 13,000 students and offers courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels for various subjects. The Birbeck also holds affiliations with European University Association, Universities UK, Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

Birkbeck has two campuses, one in Bloomsbury in central London, and a second campus in Stratford in east London.Located between Woburn Square and  Malet St, Bloomsbury, the Bloomsbury campus is the main campus of Birkbeck. The campus offers the majority of Birkbeck’s courses and also houses a five-floor library along with with on-campus cafes, George Birkbeck bar, coffee shops and Peltz Gallery. Also, the campus is surrounded by world-famous museums and galleries with the West End, Soho, Covent Garden and King’s Cross right at the doorstep. Located in University Square on Salway Road, the Birbeck’s Stratford campus was opened in November 2013 and also offers a range of undergraduate and short courses. The campus is also well-connected to the rest of the city via public transport and the Stratford Station which is just a 5-minute walk from the University Square campus and has major links to the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), Tube, rail and bus services.
