About

Founded on February 1826 under the name London university as an alternative to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, London University was incorporated by royal charter in the year 1836 under the name University College, London. The University was created by royal charter as a degree-awarding board for students from affiliated colleges with the university college and King's College, London being named in the charter as the first two affiliates. UCL was reconstituted as a federal university in 1900. UCL was merged to the University in 1907 and renamed as university college London. UCL joined with the School of Pharmacy in 2012, and joined with the institute of education in 2013. University College London was ranked 8th in the Q.S. World University 2020 making it the top-ranked institution in London and fourth in Europe. University College London has over 42,000 students, and more than 19,000 students are international. Some notable University College, London alumni include Alexander Graham Bell, Mahatma Gandhi, Francis Crick, Kwame Nkrumah and Lucien Freud. Also, Nobel Prizes have been awarded to at least 30 UCL academics and students.
