About the College of Fine Arts, Frankfurt

The College of Fine Arts, also called Städelschule, has a rich history and was founded in 1817 by the Städel Institute and started by an endowment by Johann Friedrich Städel, who was also the founder of the Städel Institute. He was a wealthy banker and a patron of arts. After he passed away, he left his art collection, his house and his art collection to start the Städel Institute of Art. This was done so that a scholarship could be set up for poor children to receive training in architecture and art. He specifically said and is also his famous words saying He wanted them to be "...educated to become valuable and useful citizens and artists" Stadel passed away in 1816, and the first scholarships were given out in 1817. The school has a very strict criteria for selection and selects only  20 students each year from 500 applicants. Many notable professors are pioneers in their respective fields and teach at Städelschule. Some of them are Willem de Rooij, Haegue Yang, Judith Hopf , Hassan Khan, and Tobias Rehberger. One of the most notable professors was  Max Beckmann, who taught during the Weimar Republic and was one of the most influential professors of modern art; later, during the rule of nazi germany was given the term degenerate artist as Hitler despised modern art, and Max Beckmann was removed from his position as a professor at Städelschule.
