What happens if I get locked out of my room?

If locked out of the room during office hours, please make the way to reception or call the office and one of their staff will be able to assist. After hours, please call the RA or EDM to advise them. Please note a $10 after-hours lockout fee applies which gets donated to charity.

What happens if I lose my key or swipe?

It's important to make sure that keys are always known where they are. Please note that there is a $20 cost to replace the swipe card and $250 cost to replace the room key if lost. These charges will be placed directly onto the account.

How often will my room be inspected?

Common areas within the apartment are inspected on a monthly basis and room inspections occur each semester. They will advise prior to these inspections occurring.

How much does it cost to do laundry?

It is $4 per wash and $1 per dry cycle.

Can I book rooms to study in or do group study?

The common spaces are for all students however on request they can arrange the e-library or boardroom as a private space, please see reception to book in the time.

What are some examples of the live, learn, and grow program?

Is there any heating or cooling in my room?

Their apartments do not have any heaters or fans within the rooms. Please note though that residents are welcome to bring their own fan and enclosed column heater as per the village rules; -In the interests of safety, heaters with an exposed element like small fan heaters and bar heaters are prohibited within the village. -Please use common sense when using the heaters. Do not leave heaters on when leaving the room or apartment and do not place any items of clothing or any other article over or close to a heater.

Is there a shuttle bus?

The property has a shuttle bus which runs around the campus, train station, and the village.

How long will it take me to walk from the village to the library?

The village reception to the on campus library is approximately a 5-10 minute walk. Alternatively there is a campus shuttle bus which can be caught.

Is there security and after hours support available at the village?

They offer 24 hour support to their residents with village management, RAs, and campus security. RAs and evening duty managers are always on call.

I'm living with 4 other people, whose responsibility is it to take out the rubbish?

Living in shared accommodation means that everyone needs to help to keep the apartment clean and tidy. If there are any apartment disputes, residents can arrange with reception to have their village management mediate an apartment meeting.

Semester or Full year?

If the semester in advance or full year in advance rent frequency option was selected, this is due before the contract commencement date. This is not automatically debited from the account and must be paid by bank transfer, EFTPOS or online.

Will I get a reminder?

Reminders are sent on Monday, two days before the rent is due.

The contract dates don't suit me, can I negotiate?

Unfortunately all contract dates are fixed and non-flexible. Residents are more than welcome to arrive at the village after the contract start date but please note that rent must be paid from the contract start date, not the date of check in.

What is First Year Exemption? Am I eligible?

If a domestic first year student applying through UAC / VTAC / QTAC / TISC, eligibility for First Year Exemption may apply. Eligibility exists if: If the contract has not commenced, the bond will be refunded where applicable. If the contract has started, residents are liable for rent up to the date of notification / moving out of the Village. The bond will be refunded where applicable. Please note the First Year Exemption will not apply where a University Offer has been accepted, but the studies are elected to be deferred or withdrawn from. Notification must be given to Village Management in writing (Resident Notification) within 5 days from the UAC / VTAC / QTAC / TISC Main Round offers release date (generally around late January - refer to the UAC / VTAC / QTAC / TISC website for actual dates).

Will I have my own bathroom?

All rooms are equipped with an ensuite bathroom with exceptions of the 2 bedroom apartment which has two residents sharing the apartment bathroom. All lounge and kitchen areas are shared, unless in a 1 bedroom apartment.

How far is the village from the university?

The village is located on the university campus and is only a short walk from classes and university facilities. Walking from the room to the farthest point on campus will take at most 10-15 minutes.

Is there after hours support?

There is always a staff member or resident assistant available for support at the village in case of emergency. Residents can call at any time for assistance.

What is the latest I can apply?

There is no deadline for applications, however please note that once the village has reached capacity residents are only able to sit on the wait list and they cannot guarantee that a room will become available.

Is there any heating/cooling in my room?

There are two room types that include air conditioning. For the other types of rooms there is no heating or cooling included. Residents are able to bring their own pedestal fans and oil heaters with them if they wish.

Is there access to public transportation?

There is a bus stop right outside the village which can take residents to nearby shops, and directly into the CBD. The property train station is a short walk or bus ride away, and from there the Metro and train services can be used to get anywhere in Sydney!

Is there a cleaning service?

There is no cleaning service at the village. Residents are required to upkeep their personal areas themselves, and organise among the other residents of the apartment how to keep the common areas clean. There are inspections throughout the year, and if areas are deemed below standard, penalties will apply where relevant to cover the cost of professional cleaning.

Does my room have a window?

All rooms at the village have a window that can be opened.

Who has access to my room?

Every room has a lockable door - only the resident will have access to their room. If in shared accommodation, the communal areas will be accessible to all tenants of the specific apartment.

Is the village secure?

The village has A+ security, with a staff member or resident assistant on duty at all times in case of an emergency. Residents are issued with swipe cards so only they have access to the village through the security gates, and residents are the only person with a key to their room.

Is there a curfew at the village?

The Village is the home and residents are welcome to come and go as they please. Please note though that they do have rules regarding noise and visitors within the Village.

Noise Curfew?

Residents must comply with all directions from Village management in relation to noise minimisation, particularly in response to noise complaints from other residents of the Village and/or neighbours of the Village. For more information please refer to the Village Noise Policy.

during the exam periods, please note that these times do change and there should be no excessive noise within the Village during this time.

Visitors?

A visitor is defined as a person who is meeting with a resident for a short period of time, while a guest is defined as a person who is staying overnight with a resident in accordance with the Rules. All visitors are required to leave the Village by 12 midnight (unless otherwise notified to residents by Village management from time to time). Any visitor present in the Village after the specified time will be considered an “unauthorised person” to which Rule 52 (Overnight Guests & Unauthorised Occupancy) and Rule 69 (Trespassing) applies. Can a couple live at the village?

All rooms are single occupancy at the village so unfortunately couples are unable to stay in the same room.

How would I get my mail at the village?

All parcels delivered to Student Village North Ryde are collected by their reception team. They will contact via email to collect the parcel or letter from the administration building once it has arrived. Residents should include their apartment and room number in the address when having parcels delivered. The postal address is:

Can I live at the village if I do not study at the property?

The Village gives priority to applications from Macquarie University students. If studying at another tertiary institution, please contact them. They may be able to accommodate with management's approval.

What type of heater am I allowed to bring?

Residents are allowed to bring oil heaters. Fan heaters are not permitted at the village due to fire safety rules. If any further questions or unsure and would like clarification please contact them.

Why am I required to make an application so early on?

Applications open early due to the high demand of students looking for on campus accommodation. To secure a room at the village it is recommended to submit the application as soon as possible. They don't want residents to miss out!

How much is it to do laundry?

There are two laundries at the village, one on the West side and one on the East side. The washing machines cost $4 per load and dryers cost $1 per load.

Can I bring my pet?

The village has a no pet policy – this includes fish. If a service animal, please contact them in regard to the concessions that may be available.

Do I have to find my own roommates?

Residents don't need to find their own roommates. If interested in a shared apartment, they will do their best to pair with people who have similar preferences. If already have specific individuals liked to live with, please list their names in the roommate preferences section of the application. Whilst they will try to accommodate these requests, please be aware that they cannot guarantee them due to the high volume of requests received.

Do I need to bring kitchen utilities such as a kettle or toaster with me?

The kitchens are already kitted out with basic amenities, such as the fridge and the microwave. However, residents will need to supply their own utilities such as a toaster, kettle, and sandwich press for example. If living in shared accommodation, residents can always wait until they meet their roommates to organise a group shop to figure out what everyone has brought along with them.

How is the village different to the other types of university residential housing?

The village fosters independent living while also accommodating students who are just moving out of home for the first time. There is a strong communal atmosphere among the residents which helps students adjust to a more self-sufficient lifestyle while they learn to look after themselves through their cooking, laundry, and housekeeping duties. There are many options for residents to become involved in the village community. What supermarkets are close by for me to purchase food?

Woolworths Marsfield is about a 15 minute walk from the village. For more variety the nearby Macquarie Centre can be visited where shopping at Aldi, Coles, and Woolworths is possible. Macquarie Centre is approximately a 5 minute drive. Trafalgar Supermarket and Cellars is a 5 minute walk from the village if something closer to home is needed. There are also cafes and food spots which are located on campus and available to students throughout the day.

I am an international student who is new to the area, how can I travel from the airport to the Village?

The village does not operate a direct airport pick up service, however Macquarie University does offer a service for international students which may be eligible for. Public transport, taxi, and Uber are alternative options.

Do I have to pay extra for utilities?

Utility prices are included in the advertised room rates on their website. Residents are not required to pay an additional utility fee on top of the rental payment - there are no nasty surprise charges!

What fees am I required to pay to secure a room at the Village?

Application Fee: paid when submitting the application for the first time. Security Deposit: this amounts to 4 weeks rent and is held over the course of the stay in case of damage to the room. Where applicable, this will be refunded at the end of the contract. Please note that the security deposit is not rent in advance. Registration Fee: this is a one off processing fee, which is put towards residential life and the student experience at the village. Annual Cleaning Fee: this is held over the course of the stay and used to clean the room once departure from the village.

How do I know if my application is approved?

Residents will receive an invitation of accommodation from the village via email if successful. Please note, an invitation can only be sent if all steps of the application process are completed.

Can I purchase a kitchen or linen pack from the village?

There is an option to purchase a linen or kitchen pack upon arrival at the village.

What hours is reception open?

Their village reception is open 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday. After hours residents can contact their Resident Support Officers if any assistance is needed.

What is the closest train station?

The closest train station is Macquarie University train station and is a quick walk through the university campus or a bus can be taken from outside the village which will drop off at the station.

Where is the nearest swimming pool?

There is a pool at the Macquarie University Sport and Aquatic Centre, which is roughly a 5 minute walk away.

Will my room have a TV?

Unfortunately they don't provide TVs, however residents can bring their own. There are TV aerials located within the lounge room of each apartment and within the bedroom.

What does a twin room mean?

The twin room is shared between two residents. Within the room each has their own single bed, desk, and bedside table - the bathroom is shared.

Can I smoke in the village?

Student Village North Ryde is a smoke free campus. Residents must abide by Village Rule 66 - no smoking within any undercover area or within apartments and rooms.

Can I choose my own room?

Can I bring my own internet?

Residents are more than welcome to bring their own internet provided it is a Wi-Fi dongle, they do not permit ADSL to be installed. Keep in mind that residents can connect to the free wifi provided by Macquarie University no matter where they are in the village!

Can I have people stay over?

Although they do not encourage overnight guests, they do understand that someone may stay from time to time. Please make sure that guests are signed into reception upon arrival and signed out on departure, and understand the rules surrounding visitors. As per the village rules, a guest can stay no more than 2 consecutive nights in a 7 day period.

Where can I park?

Secure parking is available within the village at a rate of $12.90 per week (charged with rent). There are limited free parking spaces on Culloden Road and Waterloo Road for visitors.

How far away is Sydney CBD? How do I get there?

A bus can be caught straight to the city from outside the village which can take anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour. Alternatively, a bus can be taken or a walk to Macquarie University Station and then Metro and train services into the CBD. This option takes about 45 minutes.

What happens if I miss my rent? Is there a late fee?

It is important to always pay rent on time. If there will not be sufficient funds in the account prior to the rent date, please make sure to email management so that arrangements can be made. If the rent is processed and there are insufficient funds, please note that a $20 late fee will be charged and a breach notice from village management will be received.

What is the cleaning fee?

A one off payment to cover the deeper clean required at the end of the stay with them. This payment would also be made by the previous resident to have the room cleaned prior to arrival.

What is the registration fee?

A one off payment to go towards any resident activities and events that are held throughout the year for enjoyment.

What is the application fee?

The Application Fee is a one-time processing payment that is made when the security deposit is paid. Please note that the application fee is non-refundable.

How can I prove I am a student?

When arriving at the village residents will be asked to provide their student ID card. If a first year university student and the student ID has not been received, the letter of offer must be provided as proof of enrollment upon check-in and the student card provided once received.

What is the difference between the East and the West?

The East was built for the 2000 Olympics, and the West was built in 2007. The East and the West have the same layout. The West is a 1 or 2 minute longer walk to campus.

What if I'm locked out of the gates, how do I get in?

If locked out of the village the intercom at the gates can be used to contact reception and a team member will let in. If locked out after hours the RA or evening duty manager can be called who will let in.

How do I check in after hours?

Once arrived at the village the RA or evening duty manager can be called who will check in as normal. If expecting to arrive very late into the night or early in the morning please give as much advance notice as possible.

I'm not a Macquarie Student, am I still eligible to stay on campus?

Residents must be enrolled to study at Macquarie University and be over 18 years of age to stay at the village.

Can I live here if I am under 18?

For domestic students, residents must be at least 18 years old or turning 18 by the end of the semester moving in to be eligible to live at the Village. In addition, a completed Guarantor Form must be submitted before the room confirmation can be processed. For international students, they cannot accept applications until turned 18.

Is there internet access?

All residents can connect to the free and fast WiFi provided by Macquarie University. Additional data can be purchased from reception if required under a ConnectMy.net plan.

Are meals included?

The property does not provide catering. However each apartment has access to a fully equipped kitchen including a fridge, freezer, stove top, and microwave so feel free to cook up a storm at any time of the day!
