Maroubra is a beachfront neighbourhood in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is located in the City of Randwick local government region, 10 kilometres southeast of Sydney's CBD. By area and population, Maroubra is the largest suburb in the Randwick City Council, and Maroubra Junction is a locality. Indigenous to the area, the word "Maroubra" means "place of thunder." Humphrey McKeon constructed the region's first home in 1861. In the 1870s, further people moved to the area to work at the wool scouring business at the bay's northern end. In addition to Maroubra Junction, there are a few other shopping locations, such as those near Maroubra Beach. Numerous cafes and restaurants, as well as various retail establishments like surf shops, yoga studios, a drugstore and newsagent, the Maroubra Seals Club, and The Bay Hotel, can be found on McKeon Street and Marine Parade.
