Middlesbrough College is a leading research and educational university located in Middlehaven, Middlesbrough, and it is the largest college in Teesside. It mainly provides further education but also provides selected higher education provisions. Until 2008,  the university existed in four separate sites across the town: Marton, Acklam, Kirby, and Longlands. It relocated to Middehaven as a part of the Tees Valley Regeneration's major redevelopment project. Middlesbrough College was formed on August 1, 1995, by the merger of Kirby College of Further Education and Acklam Sixth Form College, while Teesside Tertiary College was formed on August 1, 1995, by the merging of Longlands College of Further Education and Marton Sixth Form College.


On August 1, 2002, Middlesbrough College merged with Teesside Tertiary College, and once the merger was complete, plans to relocate to a new site were initiated.
