Qualifying Criteria?

As they are a registered charity with a specific object, they are only permitted to allow certain qualifying people to reside in their properties. To be able to use their accommodation you must be (a) in employment, a job seeker or a student; and (b) over the age of 18 Unfortunately they do not accept families with children.

Can i arrange a viewing?

You are welcome to visit any of their residences daily between 11am and 7pm. When you arrive, please proceed to the reception desk. They will gladly provide you with a tour of the residence and offer detailed information about the amenities and services available. Please keep in mind that they prioritize customer privacy, so occupied rooms cannot be shown. However, rest assured that you will still have the opportunity to explore all the other facilities provided within the residence.

Why availability is not displayed online?

They have always been proud to offer flexible terms to all their residents. Each resident staying with them can provide only one week’s written notice if they wish to leave before their agreed departure date. Due to that, they don't sell their rooms too far in advance and don't display availability online.

Fixed period of occupation and extension?

You are required to give both an arrival and departure date at the time of booking and as such this contract is agreed on a fixed period of occupation basis. If you wish to extend your stay beyond the fixed period, you should contact them as soon as possible. Any extension will be subject to availability and, even if an extension is possible, they cannot guarantee that you will be able to stay in the same room.

What are the check-in and check-out times?

The check-in time at all properties is 2:00 pm The check-out time at all properties is 10:00 am Please note: All properties have a flexible check-in approach. Please inform them in advance if your estimated arrival time will be after 21:00 so they can make sure there is somebody present to provide you with your keys. The property may ask you to leave a valid Passport during a late check-in (after 21:00) in exchange for the keys. Your document will be given back to you once the check-in is fully completed the next morning. If you have an early departure time and wish to check out during the night or in the early morning, please speak with the manager at reception the day before regarding the refund of your deposit.

Do you allow pets?

Unfortunately, they don't allow pets to stay in any of their hostels.

What to pack?

Are bathrooms shared?

With fourteen hostels across the city, they have a range of rooms suitable for every budget. Nine of their sites offer rooms with shared bathroom facilities - Belsize House, Belvedere House, Bowden Court, Halpin House, Holland House, New Mansion House, Leinster House, Railton House, and Sandeman-Allen House. All rooms have a washbasin. The residences offering rooms with private bathrooms are Davies Court, Friendship House, Newington Court, and Torquay House. Some tips on sharing a bathroom: Keep all of your shower stuff in a basket to take to and from the bathroom. Flip-flops and a robe are handy for getting to and from the shower or bath. Toilet rolls are provided Please make sure to leave the bathroom clean *Shared bathrooms are cleaned every day

What sizes are the rooms?

The size of rooms may vary for each room type within an individual residence. Unfortunately, they are not able to provide the precise dimensions of each room.

Can I choose what floor and room I stay at?

Unfortunately no. Their room allocation is set only 7-14 days before arrival and will depend on availability. If you have any specific preferences do let them know at the time of booking and they will do their best to accommodate you accordingly. If you experience any issues during your stay and would like to change the room please visit their friendly reception team.

Can I arrange to live with my friends?

Definitely! If you book one of their shared rooms as a group of friends they will be able to advise you at the time of a booking if you all will be staying together in the same room. If booking separate rooms, they will do their best to allocate you as close as possible, but note that is not guaranteed and would depend on availability. If you are a couple, their studio rooms are the perfect option.

Is there parking provided?

Unfortunately, they are not able to provide parking at their sites. However, there are off-street options available near all of their sites.

Visitor Guests?

All visitors are required to provide a photo ID and sign in and out at reception upon arrival and departure. Visitors are not allowed to enter or remain in the Hostel between 23:00 hours and 08:00 hours nor at any time in the dining room or any bedroom without prior permission of the House Manager. They may require visitors to leave and/or may exclude them from the Hostel at any time. If you staying in a shared room, please ensure you speak to your roommates to ensure they are happy to have someone in their home. If you staying in a studio room, you are welcome to have an overnight guest for an extra charge (Daily £15.00 / Weekly £50.00)

How to connect to Wi-Fi?

Wifi is included in your weekly accommodation charge.

How many people share the kitchens?

In their self-catering sites, each guest will have an access to the kitchen and will have an allocated cupboard to store their things. Kitchens are shared between 7-10 guests depending on the floor and number of residents.

What happens if I don’t get on with my new roommate? Can I swap rooms?

If you are having any issues please contact their reception team in the first instance, they will do all they can to help. In some circumstances it may be possible to change the room, but its not guaranteed and would depend on availability.

I have my own TV in my room. Do I need a TV Licence?

Yes. The TV licensing authority requires that you have a licence.

What do I do if I lose my keys?

You must keep room keys and/or access fobs secure. In case you lose your keys please get in touch with reception as soon as possible. There is an extra charge for replacing the keys (a breakdown of the costs will be provided directly at each site).

Resident code of conduct?

They take both the health and safety of their residents and their resident's ability to enjoy their buildings seriously and ask that all residents abide by their code of conduct to support their aims to create safe and secure environments. 

1.1 As part of the licence to occupy residents agree that they will not use the room, for any improper, immoral, or illegal purpose nor in any way which may, in their reasonable opinion, be a nuisance, damage or annoyance to the other residents of the hostel, or neighbors, or any other person. In particular, you will not: a) smoke in the hostel (including E-cigarettes); b) bring into or keep alcoholic drinks in the Hostel. c) prepare or cook any food in any bedroom nor in any other room of the Hostel except as provided in clause 9:5 hereof nor remove any food, crockery, cutlery, or glassware from the dining room. d) cause any noise which, if made within the room, can be heard outside the room or, if made within the common areas can be heard outside the common areas; e) keep or use drugs or psychoactive substances, the possession or use of which is prohibited by law (including but not limited to the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 or the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016); f) keep or use any firearms, knives (other than kitchen knives), or any other weapons; g) harass, threaten or assault any other residents, their guests, their employees, or any other person; h) tamper with their fire prevention systems and control equipment (including not maliciously, recklessly, or negligently activating such fire prevention systems) i) use designated fire escapes except for the purposes of emergency escape; j) keep, store or use any gas or oil heater or other fuel-burning appliance in the Property, including candles and any other flame-lit device; k) keep any animal, bird, insect, or reptile. l) Register a business at a property address m) Gamble for money on property premises. n) erect any external wireless or television aerial or satellite dish at the Property or hang clothes or fabrics out of the windows or doors of the Property. 


1.2 Any action which may put the safety of the building or its occupants at risk could constitute an offence under Health and Safety legislation. Vandalism could constitute an offence under the Act. In addition they reserve the right to recover from residents the full cost of repairs arising out of acts of vandalism or unauthorised alterations to any part of their property. 


1.3 You must acquaint yourself with the fire and safety precautions, the fire escape evacuation routes, the location of fire exits and the assembly point; if in any doubt, please ask the House Manager. 


1.4 Residents agree to vacate the hostel (and to ensure that any visitors you have also vacate the hostel), immediately whenever the fire alarm is sounded. You should notify them in advance should you have any visitors to the room who may require assistance should it be necessary to evacuate the hostel.


 1.5 You should note that tampering with fire prevention/life-saving equipment such as, but not restricted to, fire extinguishers, fire doors and smoke detectors, is a criminal offence (punishable by a fine and/or imprisonment) and it will be treated as a serious breach of the licence to occupy. 


1.6 Where a self-catering or pantry kitchen is provided the following conditions will apply; a) You must prepare and cook the food only in the kitchen area allocated for that purpose and in no other part of the hostel. b) After you have finished cooking you should clean the cookers and other kitchen equipment that you have used. c) You must report any breakages of kitchen equipment to the House Manager of the Hostel immediately and you will be responsible for replacing at your own expense any equipment that you damage. d) You must only use the self-catering facilities during the hours permitted by the House Manager and when using the kitchen equipment, you should have regard to the equipment and wishes of other users.


 1.7 You should keep the accommodation allocated to you in a reasonable, clean and tidy state, limiting your personal belongings to the minimum.


 1.8 they have a zero tolerance policy on acts of aggression and violence towards both its staff and residents where any act as described above occurs the “LICENCE TO OCCUPY” will be terminated. 


1.9 Where the behaviour of a resident impacts negatively upon other residents’ enjoyment of the hostel environment they reserve the right to terminate the “LICENCE TO OCCUPY”. 


1.10 If you are in contact with or contract any contagious or infectious disease you should report such a fact to the House Manager immediately. 


1.11 The possession of your own television set or use other technologies in a way that requires a TV licence requires you to have a valid TV licence. 


1.12 You must ensure that your room is locked at all times.

Do you have a loyalty scheme discount?

They sure do! In shared rooms in selected properties, you can receive a discount of up to 25% off. The longer you stay, the less you pay!

Can I receive post?

Absolutely! Letters and parcels can be delivered to reception, just visit the reception desk to collect them.

Is there a curfew?

No. You are free to come and go as you please, but please be considerate and don't make too much noise when entering the residence late at night or early in the morning.

Getting to Bowden Court?

From an Airport If you are arriving at Heathrow, City, Gatwick, or Stansted Airports, you can plan your journey in advance using the Transport for London Journey Planner. From a Train Station Bowden Court is located on the Central, Hammersmith&City and Circle line and is easily accessible to Paddington, King’s Cross, St Pancras, and Victoria train stations.

Which hours of the day will I be required to volunteer?

They recommend you give them a minimum of 20 hours a week. When you are offered a role, the exact times of day will be confirmed. In general, their volunteers are required either in the morning, late afternoon or evening shifts. You’ll have 1 or 2 days off per week depending on how the hours are split for the week.

Are meals for volunteers included?

They are indeed! You can enjoy breakfast and dinner during the week, and breakfast and lunch on the weekends. If you are volunteering at a self-catered hostel, you are welcome to visit one of their catered hostels for your meals. Alternatively, kitchen facilities are also available in self-catered sites for your use.

What tasks will I be required to do as a volunteer?

The types of duties which form part of your volunteer role will vary by property and can change from day to day but will usually involve the following:

1. If you are volunteering in a catered property: to help set up, serve, clear away at meal times – breakfast, evening meals and lunch at weekends. Keep the kitchen, dining room and other catering areas clean. This includes pot washing, cleaning of appliances and operating dishwasher machine. 2. Help the Cook in basic food preparation, put away deliveries and keep the kitchen and cooking utensils clean and tidy. 3. Everyday general cleaning and portering duties covering all areas and to include; the cleaning of showers, toilets, bedrooms, public & communal areas, immediate external areas, kitchens and dining room. 4. Occasional special cleaning, e.g. carpet cleaning, deep cleaning areas, oven cleaning, washing down walls, laundry, cleaning vents and inside of windows. 5. Changing bed linen, counting and preparing laundry for collection. 6. Office duties to include check in/out, dealing with enquiries, taking bookings, responding to complaints, logging/reporting problems and maintenance issues. 7. Night porter duties; offering basic office cover and contact for residents after office hours. Some cleaning duties may also be required.

In which type of room would I stay as a volunteer?

Volunteers stay in their shared single-sex dormitories with other volunteers. It depends on the hostel and the availability as to how many other volunteers you will be staying with, but it will be between 2-5 other people.

I have “indefinite leave to remain” in the UK, am I able to volunteer?

There are a number of other visas which generally mean you are able to join the volunteer scheme these include:
* A passport or ‘other travel document’ (current or expired) endorsed to show the holder is either ‘exempt from immigration control’, has ‘indefinite leave in the UK’, has the ‘right of abode’ in the UK, or has ‘no time limit’ on their stay in the UK. * A certificate of registration or naturalisation as a British citizen. * A current passport or other ‘travel document’ endorsed to show that the holder is allowed to stay in the UK for a time-limited period. * A current biometric ‘residence permit’ card issued by the Home Office to the holder, which indicates that the named person is permitted to stay in the UK for a time-limited period * A current immigration status document issued by the Home Office to the holder with a valid endorsement indicating that the holder may stay in the UK for a time-limited period

How long can I volunteer for?

The minimum stay is six weeks and the maximum stay is two years.

I’m an international student and want to volunteer while studying in the UK?

If you’re an international student studying in the UK, normally you are able to volunteer with them during the period you are enrolled at a UK university. In some instances, restrictions may apply. You must always ensure that you do not have restrictions on your visa preventing you from volunteering whilst in the UK.

I live outside the UK can I volunteer whilst on holiday?

If you would like to volunteer during your stay you can volunteer with them for a maximum of 30 days.

I’ve entered the UK as part of the youth mobility scheme (formerly a working holiday visa), am I able to volunteer?

Yes. Persons from Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Republic of Korea and Taiwan aged between 18 and 30 are able to live and work in the UK for up to two years through the youth mobility scheme and so are welcome to join the volunteer scheme. Can I volunteer without a visa?

All British nationals are able to volunteer without a visa. Persons from the EU and EEA are able to volunteer without a visa until the 30th June 2021. These are persons from: EU Countries Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden.
