The University of Newcastle (UON) is a public university in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. Its main campus is located in Newcastle's Callaghan neighbourhood, founded in 1965. The university also has campuses in Singapore, the central business districts of Newcastle, Sydney, Port Macquarie, and Ourimbah.
The University of Newcastle's earliest known antecedents is the 1949-founded Newcastle Teachers College and the University of Newcastle College (NUC, established 1951). When NUC was established as a division of the New South Wales University of Technology, now known as the University of New South Wales, the Newcastle Technical College and NUC shared space at Tighes Hill. Engineering, mathematics, and science were the only subjects of study offered when NUC was first established, and there were only five full-time students.
In the QS World University Rankings for 2023, University of Newcastle is currently ranked 122. It moved to 146th in the 2022 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. 95% of University of Newcastle's 2016 UK and EU graduates found jobs or continued their studies within six months of graduation, confirming the university's high employment rate. the university is ranked number 23 in the 2019 Times Higher Education Europe Teaching Rankings.
