Located in Sydney, Australia, the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is a public research university whose origin is traced back to 1833. Founded as Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts, the School formed the Workingman's College in the 1870s. Later on, the College was taken over by the NSW government to build the Sydney Technical College in the year 1882. Later, in 1964, following the Act passed by the NSW Parliament to establish an Institute of Technology, the New South Wales Institute of Technology (NSWIT) was created. Subsequently, on 8 October 1987, the NSWIT was granted its university status regarding the University of Technology Sydney Act 1987. Finally 1988, following the amalgamation of the School of Design of the former Sydney College of the Arts with the NSWIT, the institute was reconstituted and named the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). Being a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning, the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Australian Technology Network, the UTS is currently home to around 45,930 students and offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, research and short courses in various subjects.
