Cardiff Metropolitan University


The history of Cardiff Metropolitan University traces back to the year 1865. Cardiff School of Art opened in 1865 and moved to Technical buildings, Friary then to a new campus in Howard Gardens in 1965. In the year 1976, four institutes of the university merged to form the 

Cardiff Institute of Higher Education. The University got its current name- Cardiff Metropolitan University after it ended its affiliation with the University of Wales in 2011. According to the National Student Survey 2018, there is a steady rise in the overall student satisfaction in Cardiff Met; some degree programmes even achieved 100% satisfaction among students. The University partnered with many international institutions like - Arab Academy of Science and Technology, the Beacon International College and the City Unity College to develop global identity. Cardiff Met has also been awarded a Silver Teaching Excellence Framework rating for high-quality education in 2017 by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. Cardiff Metropolitan University consists of these academic schools - Cardiff School of Art & Design, Cardiff School of Education & Social Policy, Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences, Cardiff School of Management, Cardiff School of Technologies.

Cyncoed Campus-

The Cyncoed Campus offers on-site accommodation, excellent sporting facilities, shops, coffee bars. The campus is also the head office for the Students Union. Cyncoed is home to the Cardiff School of Education & Social Policy and the Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences.

By Bus

From the city centre to the Cyncoed Campus, the 52/52A bus travels every 15 minutes during the day. The U1 MetRider bus travels from Llandaff campus to the Cyncoed campus during term time, Cardiff Metropolitan University also offers a MetRider bus pass​ for students and staff and many more.


Heath High Level and Heath Low-Level railway stations are approx. Twenty-five minutes walk from the Cyncoed campus.

Llandaff Campus

Llandaff is a bustling campus, offering state-of-the-art learning facilities, student union, on-site shops, coffee bars- Costa and Starbucks. The campus is located very near to the city centre and home to the Cardiff School of Sport & Health Science, Cardiff School of Management and the ​​​Cardiff School of Art & Design​. This campus is also conveniently situated near our Plas Gwyn residential campus.


During term time, U1, U2, and U3/U4 MetRider buses travel hourly to Llandaff from the Cyncoed campus. MetRider bus pass is also available for students and staff.


Waun-Gron railway station is approx. Twenty minutes walk away from the Llandaff campus and are on the City Line.

Plas Gwyn is a residential campus with en-suite accommodation.

Student life

Cardiff is a modern capital city boasting excellent and exciting events, hosting Rugby World Cup and the annual Six Nations Championship, major theatre productions, comedy acts and musicians, quirkier events like street food festivals, you will have many things to explore in Cardiff  Cardiff has been consistently ranked in the top three UK cities for students in 2016, 2017 and 2018 NatWest Student Living Index. After a long day at the university, students can head to the suburbs of Roath and Cathays where they will find many pubs, cafes, bars etc. - Mill Lane is popular for its stylish cocktail bar scene.
