Royal Holloway


Royal Holloway is formed from the merger between two colleges that offered higher education to women namely Royal Holloway College and Bedford Colleges. Founded by two social pioneers- Elizabeth Jesser Reid and Thomas Holloway, both the colleges became part of the University of London in the year 1900, and after being co-education in 1965, they merged to form Royal Holloway in 1995. Royal Holloway is a public research university, and a constituent college of the federal University of London. Royal Holloway has 21 academic departments and schools. The University's campus is based on the design of the Château Chambord, one of the largest and most distinctive châteaux in the Loire Valley. 

The campus is also considered as one of the most beautiful in the world. Royal Holloway caters over 9,200 undergraduate and postgraduate students from over 100 countries, and is also a home to 1,750 staff who work in administrative, academic and support departments. The University was ranked 20th in Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide, 2020 ranking of British universities based on league table performance. Royal Holloway is ranked in the top 25 among the universities in the UK and placed in the top 300 universities in the world. The University's alumni include Lenny Henry, and singer-songwriter KT Tunstall, novelist George Eliot, Sir Andrew Motion, the former Poet Laureate, who was also appointed Professor of Creative Writing in 1999.

The University also provides bus services for students to travel to and from Egham station, and from the main campus to Egham, HOX Park and Kingswood Halls. Students studying in Royal Holloway can show their student ID Card, to get the travel discounts on Abellio bus services as well. 

By train The nearest railway station to Royal Holloway is Egham, which is situated next to Egham town centre. The duration of the journey from Egham to London Waterloo take about 40 minutes, and there are almost 2-4 trains every hour. Students are eligible for a 16-25 Railcard or a discounted Oyster card.

By cycle, students can get around Royal Holloway and the local area. The campus has over 600 spaces to park your bike, most of these spaces are covered so your bike stays secure.
