University of the West of England


Established in the year 1970, the University of the West of England, Bristol is commonly known as UWE Bristol, is a public research university located in and around the city of Bristol in England. The roots of UWE Bristol's can be traced back to the foundation of the Merchant Venturers Navigation School, which was set up in 1595. 

Subsequently, in 1894, the school grew into the Merchant Venturers Technical College, which later on turned out to become Bristol Polytechnic in 1970. However, in the year 1992, as a result of the Further and Higher Education Act, 1992, the institution gained its university status and was renamed as the University of the West of England. 

Ranked among England's top 25 higher education institutions, the UWE Bristol currently caters to a total of 29,000 students every year. The UWE provides over 400 courses at an undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional levels, out of which the particularly popular subjects include Architecture, Filmmaking, Arts, Philosophy, and Education.

The University of the West of England has a total of 4 campuses- Frenchay Campus, City Campus, Glenside Campus, and Gloucester Campus. 

Located just four miles north to the Bristol city centre at Coldharbour Ln, Stoke Gifford, the Frenchay Campus is the main campus of the UWE Bristol. The campus houses the Bristol Robotics Laboratory (Europe's largest robotics laboratory), the Students' Union building, University Enterprise Zone, and Bristol Business School. 

The city campus is made up of Spike Island, Bower Ashton Studios, Watershed and Arnolfini; and offers courses in the cultural and creative industry. Spike Island is home to the contemporary art faculty. The campus is located just a short walk from the MShed and SS Great Britain. 

Situated on Blackberry Hill in the suburb of Fishponds, the Glenside campus is home to the Faculty of Health and Applied Science. The Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences was formed as a result of a pact between the current Faculty of Health and Community Studies at the University of the West of England with the Avon and Gloucestershire College of Health and Bath and Swindon College of Health Studies. In addition to this, the campus is also home to the Glenside Museum and also offers part-time as well as full-time courses in the areas of Occupational Therapy, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Nursing Social Work and Radiography. 

Based on the West Quay in the Gloucester Docks, UWE Bristol's Gloucester campus is home to the Department of Nursing and Midwifery. The university offers nurse training which includes Pre-registration Adult and Mental Health nursing, CPD, Return to Practice and postgraduate courses.
