The town is on Portsea Island, a small peninsula sandwiched between two English Channel inlets: Portsmouth Harbour to the west and Langstone Harbour to the east. Portsmouth's naval depot and Royal Dockyard are located on the peninsula's southwestern tip, while Southsea is on the peninsula's southern tip. Moreover, it is home to the world-renowned Royal Navy and is a tourist visitor destination. Portsmouth Harbour is shaped like a bottle, with Portsmouth on the east and Gosport on the west. Spithead, located at the eastern end of The Solent, which connects the English mainland to the offshore Isle of Wight, is where the harbour opens. It has a population of around 251,169 people, out of which 25,000 students attend universities, especially the University of Portsmouth. In April 2015, it was named among the top 100 modern universities in the world.
