About

Established in the year 1851, the University of Derby formerly known as Derby College of Art and Technology or Derby College is a public university located in the city of Derby England. Founded as the Derby Diocesan Institution for the Training of Schoolmistresses, the institute, later on, became the  Derby Central School of Science and Derby Central School of Art in the year 1870. Subsequently in the year 1885, the two schools were reformulated into the Derby School of Art and Technical Institution. However, in the year 1892, three more mergers took place, and the institution became the Derby Municipal Technical College.

Later on, in the year 1992, in accordance to the Further and Higher Education Act 1992, Derbyshire College of Higher Education received its university status and became the country's only school of higher education. 


Home to around 34,000 students, University of Derby offers over 300 study programmes at foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Some of the famous alumni of the Derby University include Graham Joyce, Paul Cummins, Khumbo Kachali, David Imms, Lucy Spraggan, Idris Khan, and Devon Malcolm.

Located in the heart of England, the University of Derby has a total of three campuses in Derby, Buxton and Chesterfield. Situated close to the M1 and M6 motorways on Kedleston Road, Derby campus is the main campus of the university. Home to the majority of academic courses, Derby campus, is made up of four sites- Kedleston Road, Britannia Mill, One Friar Gate Square and Markeaton Street. The Britannia Mill offers fine art courses, social care and creative expressive therapies. Markeaton Street is home to art, design, engineering, media, computing, performing arts, and mathematics courses.


Located in the Grade II* listed 18th century Devonshire Dome on 1 Devonshire Road, Derby University's Buxton campus is a delivery site of the College of Life and Natural Science Buxton & Leek College and is home to the Centre for Contemporary Hospitality and Tourism. The campus also houses a commercial day spa, hair and beauty salon, a fine dining restaurant and outdoor leadership centre. Officially entitled as St. Helena's Campus, the Derby University's Chesterfield Campus is located in the building of what was primarily St Helena's Grammar School, off Sheffield Road, near Chesterfield city centre. The Chesterfield Campus is the centre of Excellence for Health and Social Care and offers high-quality health-care and nursing courses.
