University of Leicester


Founded in 1921, The University was founded as Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland University College. The University of Leicester is a public research university based in Leicester, England. The site for the University was donated by a local businessman- Thomas Fielding Johnson. The reason for this was to create a living memorial for all local people who made sacrifices during the First World war. This reflects in the University's motto- Ut Vitam habeant – 'so that they may have life.' This motto stands as a permanent reminder of that story and our legacy. In 1927 the institution became University College; 30 years later the college was granted its Royal Charter which gave it the University status. The University of Leicester has a history of ambitious projects which lead to amazing discoveries. The Teaching Excellence Framework awarded Leicester Silver. The University of Leicester ranked 41st in the Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide 2020. Leicester is placed 239th position in the 2020 Q.S. World University Rankings. This puts the University of Leicester 31st in the list of U.K. universities included in the ranking.
