British Council set to become National Agency for Erasmus+

The British Council is set to become the UK’s National Agency for Erasmus+, marking a major step in the country’s return to the European student mobility scheme. The development follows the UK and EU finalising an agreement for the UK to rejoin Erasmus+ from 2027, restoring access to a widely used international exchange framework.

UK Confirms Return to Erasmus+

The UK government has officially confirmed that the country will rejoin Erasmus+ from the 2027 academic year. This move comes after years outside the programme following Brexit and signals a renewed effort to strengthen educational ties with Europe.

Erasmus+ is a European Union initiative that supports education, training, youth, and sport by funding opportunities for students and staff to study, train, or gain experience abroad.

The return is expected to benefit thousands of participants. Reports suggest that over 100,000 individuals could take part in the programme in its first year, highlighting its scale and demand.

British Council’s Role as National Agency

The British Council is going to be in charge of the UKs National Agency for Erasmus+. This means the British Council will help organisations that want to apply to the Erasmus+ programme. It will also assist the participants of Erasmus+ with finding opportunities and will be responsible for supporting these organisations and participants of the Erasmus+ programme.

The organisation is not new to this responsibility. Between 2014 and 2020, it previously managed the programme in the UK, overseeing more than 8,000 projects, engaging over 600,000 participants, and allocating €1.1 billion to organisations across the UK.

In its renewed role, the British Council will be expected to liaise closely with government departments and the European Commission when operating. It will also promote participation, deliver funding and lead bodies through the application processes.

“Re-entering Erasmus+ would be of enormous benefit to a range of people from different backgrounds throughout the UK, giving them a global outlook and a whole range of skills of value both to themselves and to the UK."

-Scott McDonald, British Council’s Chief Executive

What Erasmus+ Offers Students

Erasmus+ consists of many opportunities other than university exchange programmes. This could include studying, internships, training or even working on a project abroad.

Open to students, apprentices, teachers and youth workers, you can use Erasmus+ to gain new skills and experiences. It offers funding to help you study or train abroad for less.

Additionally, Erasmus+ promotes international and intercultural exchange. Through teaming up with other institutions, you can gain experience abroad and work on building your global network.

What This Means for Students

Rejoining Erasmus+ will open access to opportunities for structured mobility again. Students will be able to study or work in Europe as part of their degree.

It will also allow UK institutions to deepen partnerships with universities and organisations across Europe creating more joint projects and exchanges.

In conclusion, having the British Council as the National Agency is a positive move, indicating an organised effort to take advantage of what Erasmus+ has to offer. Students are likely to see a wider range of opportunities abroad that are easy to access. They'll also be able to secure more funding and have the opportunity to experience what it's like to study abroad as the UK once again becomes part of the European education system.
