The public transportation system in Australia is very efficient in coverage, punctuality and frequency, which makes it easy for students to get around. Metropolitan areas are divided into zones, and the type and cost of your ticket are determined by which zone you will travel in and for how long. Tickets can be purchased at train stations, bus and tram stops, and newsstands.
1. Buses
This service is spread across, making it convenient for students to travel. The average bus fare is AU$5, and the concessional fare is AU$2.25. The bus stop closest to Melbourne City College is the Southern Cross stop.
2. Trains
Melbourne has 218 suburban stations on 16 lines, most of which are subway stations. Southern Cross train station, which is the major railway station and transport hub for Melbourne, is just opposite the campus. A full-fare myki card costs AU$6, and a concession, seniors, or child myki costs $3.
3. Taxis
Taxicabs with metres are available in all major cities and towns. Taxi ranks can be found at transportation hubs, major hotels, and shopping malls, or you can hail a taxi on the street. A light and sign on the roof indicate whether or not a cab is available. There is a minimum hire fee, and then a fee /kilometre travelled. Taxi drivers are not required to be tipped.
4. Cycle
The city of Melbourne offers beautiful trails where you can cycle and explore the city. The MCCA also encourages students to utilise more cycles as it is better for health as well as the environment! It's a win-win!
