What are Scottish Highers?

Scottish Highers is a qualification in Scotland's education system. It is typically taken by students aged 16 to 18 years who are looking for further studies, training, or work. Scottish Highers are considered equivalent to the A-levels offered in other parts of the UK. You can take the Scottish Highers during your fifth and sixth years of secondary school, as these are key for university admissions.

What Grades do I need to progress to Highers?

Most Scottish universities require at least 5 National 5 qualifications (Nat 5s) with grades A to C. However, they acknowledge that a few students might bypass Nat 5s and proceed directly to higher studies. Also, note that this will not negatively affect your application.

Who are Scottish Highers For?

1. For students thinking of attending a Scottish university, most higher education programs require a minimum of four higher qualifications.
2. Students who are unsure about their careers can study a selection of higher education courses to keep their options open.

Scotland UCAS Tariff Points

The Scotland UCAS tariff points are used by Scottish universities and colleges to compare qualifications and set course entry requirements. Students need to understand how their qualifications translate into UCAS tariff points. The table below shows the translation of Scottish Highers into UCAS tariff points:

Entry Requirements for UCAS Scotland 2025

If you’re planning to apply to universities in Scotland through UCAS, understanding the UCAS Scotland entry requirements is vital. The programs at universities in Scotland have two sets of entry requirements: standard and minimum. Both these requirements indicate the grades that you must achieve by the time you start your studies. However, the requirements only apply if you’re a ‘widening access’ student.

A ‘widening access’ student is an individual from an underrepresented or disadvantaged background who may face barriers to higher education. Scottish educational institutions recognise that certain students may need additional support, and they identify each student’s talent and potential. All universities in Scotland have their own rules around widening access. However, a few general requirements include:

1. The student must have completed a pre-entry program.
2. The student must belong to a certain postcode (usually a low participation area as measured by the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD).
3. The student must attend a target school or college where performance is typically below average.}
4. The student is a care leaver or has experience of living in care.
5. The student has refugee status or is an asylum seeker.
