UK Visa Clearance Data: March 2026

Key Highlights

  • UK-sponsored study visa clearances in March 2026 for main applicants declined by -25.32%, as compared to Mar ‘25.
  • Compared to March 2024, the visa clearances in March 2026 are up by +22.92%, indicating a slight recovery.
  • Overall, student visas for main applicants decreased by -30.63% in Jan-Mar ‘26, as compared to Jan-Mar ‘25.
  • Fewer visa applications in a quarter could simply mean softening numbers from summer courses, not necessarily a drop in student interest.

As the first quarter of 2026 comes to a close, the UK Home Office has published its latest study visa clearance data for March 2026. Driven by policy changes and a transformative higher education landscape, this latest analysis by amber tracks the updated trends in the UK-sponsored study visa clearance for 2026 as compared to 2025 and 2024.

UK Sponsored Study Visa Clearances: March ‘26

UK study sponsored visas for main applicants in March 2026 showed a downward trend of -25.32% as compared to March ‘25, with a dip from 7,900 to 5,900 in March 2026.

Interestingly, when compared to March 2024, UK sponsored study visa clearances for March 2026 are up by +22.92%, indicating a slight recovery compared to 2024.

The first three months of 2026 have shown a dip, with January 2026 dropping by -31.01% as compared to January ‘25, and February 2026 marking a decrease of -35.38% as compared to February ‘25.

In 2025, the last uptick in September (+10.42%) was followed by a decline in October (-6.74%), November (-13.74%), and December (-16.76%). Amber’s UK Visa Clearance Data: December 2025 suggested that this late-cycle slowdown may influence early 2026 intake momentum. However, fewer visa applications in a quarter could simply mean softening numbers from summer courses, not necessarily a drop in student interest (which is more closely related to UCAS applications).

Study Visa Main Applicants YoY (‘25 v. ‘26)

Overall, till March 2026, student visas for main applicants decreased by -30.63%, with cumulative clearances of 29,900 in YTD March 2026, compared to 43,100 clearances YTD March 2025.

Wrapping It Up

Overall, early 2026 has begun on a softer note, with consistent YoY declines across January to March reflecting the impact of recent policy shifts and evolving student sentiment. While March showed a partial recovery compared to 2024 levels, the broader downward trend indicates a more cautious and delayed booking cycle.

For PBSA operators and institutions, this signals the need to closely monitor demand patterns and adapt strategies for upcoming intakes, as early-year volumes remain a key indicator of occupancy momentum.

Amber will continue tracking these developments through upcoming cycles to provide institutions and PBSA stakeholders with timely, data-driven insights.
