Heriot-Watt University


Established in the year 1821, Heriot-Watt University is a public research university located in the city of Edinburgh, Scotland. Formerly known as the School of Arts of Edinburgh, it is the world's first mechanics institute and the eighth oldest higher education institute in the United Kingdom. Named after the Scottish inventor James Watt and Scottish philanthropist and goldsmith George Heriot, the Heriot-Watt College gained its university status in the year 1966 and was renamed as the Heriot-Watt University. 

Awarded as the "International University of the Year", the Heriot-Watt University currently caters a total of 30,000 students worldwide and offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in energy, geoscience, infrastructure and society; engineering and physical sciences; social sciences; mathematical and computer sciences and textiles and design. However, the University is best known for it's Business, Science, Engineering and Art & Design courses. 

In addition to this, the Heriot-Watt University also holds affiliations at CESAER, Association of Commonwealth Universities, ERASMUS, Universities UK and Universities Scotland.    


The Heriot-Watt University has a total of five campuses- Edinburgh, Scottish Borders, Malaysia, Dubai and Orkney.

Located at Riccarton in South West Edinburgh, the Heriot-Watt University's Edinburgh campus is spread across 380 acres of parkland. The campus houses the Student Union's main premises, academic buildings, a postgraduate centre, student residences, several library collections, a variety of recreational and sports facilities, healthcare and a museum as well. Apart from this, the Edinburgh Campus is also home to Europe's oldest research park and Edinburgh Conference Centre. 

Situated in Galashiels, Heriot-Watt's Scottish Borders Campus is home to the University's School of Textile and Design. The institution began its life in 1883 and gradually grew both in terms of student count and the number of courses offered, hence in 1968, it came to be named as the Scottish College of Textiles. However, in the year 1998, the School of Textiles and Design was formed as a result of a merger between the Scottish College of Textiles and Heriot-Watt. 

The Heriot-Watt's Malaysia's campus is located in Putrajaya and was opened in September 2014. Spread across 4.8 acres, the Malaysian campus is the first of its kind "Green Campus" in the state which offers both undergraduate and master's degree. 

Dubai's Heriot-Watt Campus is the first British University to set-up in Dubai International Academic City. The Dubai campus offers a range of both undergraduate and postgraduate program. The campus also houses a library, computer access, cafeteria, and shops. 

Located in Stromness, Orkney, The Heriot-Watt's Orkney is a part of the University's Institute of Petroleum Engineering and also houses the International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT). The Orkney campus offers training to a small number of postgraduate students and is host to eight members of research personnel.
