Formerly known as the University of Kent at Canterbury, The University of Kent, also known as UKC, is a semi-collegiate public research university located in the town of Kent in the United Kingdom. Established in the year 1965, the university was recognised as a Beloff's plate glass university. Later on, in the year 1965, The University of Kent was granted its Royal Charter, and in the following year on March 30 1966, Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent was formally recruited as the first Chancellor. 

Ranked among the top 55 universities in the UK, the University of Kent currently welcomes a total of over 20,000 students. Being one of the world-leading education providers, the university offers a range of programmes both undergraduate and postgraduate in various subjects. However, the university is particularly famous for its Architecture, MBA and Law courses. 

In addition to this, the University of Kent (UKC) is also an esteemed member of EUA, Universities UK, Universities at Medway, Santander Network, Eastern ARC and ACU.

Built inside the university campus, the Kent University accommodation is a residential block with shared rooms and dorms. Although UKC accommodation is one of the safest and secure accommodation options for the students, it is often hard to get a reservation as they tend to get occupied at a rapid pace.

So, the students can always choose from the range of private student houses in Canterbury, which includes deluxe studios, non-ensuite rooms, shared flats and en-suite student flats. The private student accommodation are generally constructed in almost every major parts of the city, including the areas close to UKC campuses. The University of Kent is divided into three campuses- Canterbury campus, Medway campus and Tonbridge campus.Spread across 300 acres, the UKC main Canterbury campus is located on Giles Lane which is just 3 km away from the Canterbury city centre with a view of Canterbury Cathedral- a UNESCO world heritage site. The campus currently has approx 12,000 full-time students along with 600 research and academic staff. 

The campus also houses several preserved species, including Great Crested Newts. All the educational and residential buildings are fused in the central part of the campus while the science buildings are grouped at the west of Giles Lane. Also, there is a devoted student village on the western edge, which is a short walk from the main campus. 

Located at Central Ave, Gillingham, Chatham, the Medway campus has its own two other sites, namely, The Historic Dockyard Chatham and Pembroke. Both the sites are located within just 10-minutes walking distance from each other and 30 minutes walk from the student halls located at Liberty Quays. 

The Medway campus is welcoming and firmly connected, with students from different backgrounds and cultures socialising and studying together. Also, Medway is well connected with major cities via public transport links and is close to the towns of Chatham and Rochester.

In the year 1982, the university formed a School of continuing education right in the heart of Tonbridge. Several buildings were attached with the school in the 1980s and 1990s, and the campus is currently called as the University of Kent at Tonbridge. The Tonbridge campus has been working with the Kent Business School and Kent Innovation and Enterprise.

Student life

The on-campus Gulbenkian hosts a theatre, cafe and cinema and in the city centre, you will find The Marlowe Theatre, Odeon cinema and Curzon cinema, all offering a range of shows and films. Spend your free time gyming and exercising at the university's sports centre, which also provides a wide range of exercise classes.  

Also, Canterbury houses numerous vibrant food scenes. Treat your taste buds with different cuisines, be it Mexican, French, Asian or Italian; you will always find a restaurant or small eateries at every corner of the street.
