Located in the city of Sunderland in the North East of England, the University of Sunderland is a university which has its modern roots that can be traced back to 1901. Founded as a public training college, the Sunderland Technical College began with four departments: Mechanical & Civil Engineering, Chemistry, Commerce, Languages and Physics and Electrical Engineering. Subsequently, pharmacy and naval architecture departments were also added in the year 1921 and 1922, respectively. 


Later on, in January 1969, Sunderland Polytechnic was formed as a result of a merger between Technical College, the Sunderland Teacher Training College and the School of Art. And in the year 1992, the Polytechnic gained its university status under the Further and Higher Education Act 1992.


Currently housing a total of 13,020 students, the University of Sunderland offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various subject areas including art, business and management, Design, Computing, Journalism and PR, History, Law, media, Social Science and Psychology. Griselda Allan, Andrew Zisserman, Ross Pearson, Carl Ivar Hagen, Terry Deary, Mike Rumbles, and Chris Stevenson are some of the notable alumni of the University of Sunderland.

The University of Sunderland has a total of four campuses; two in Sunderland and one in London and one in Hong Kong. The Sunderland campuses include the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's and the City Campus.


Located on the north bank of the River Wear, the St Peter's campus offer courses in subjects including Business, Law, Tourism, Computing and Engineering and Education and Social Sciences. Renamed as The Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St. Peter's in the year 2002, the campus is also home to The David Puttnam Media Centre, and the award-winning community radio station, Spark Sunderland. 


Located in the centre of the city, in Edinburgh Building, Chester Road, Sunderland, the city campus is formerly known as Chester Road Campus, is home to the university's main library, administration and support services, lecture halls, and sports facilities. Apart from this, the city campus is also the centre for the University's Arts and Design courses, the Northern Centre of Photography and also houses the university's main Science's provision which includes Pharmacy School, School of Nursing, Living Labs and School of Medicine.


Located close to the Canary Wharf financial district at 197 Marsh Wall, Isle of Dogs, the University of Sunderland London Campus provides courses related to business as well as health. Currently catering a total of 2,277 students, the London campus offers courses in nursing, business, finance, health, social care and Tourism. Situated in the heart of Hong Kong on 1 Wyndham Street, the University of Sunderland hong kong campus is home to Business, Tourism and Finance courses.
